    Yes, employers can. I was just asked my legal status on a job application for a position I just accepted here in NC.

    Nope. I recently took a new job and in the process of job hunting, here in NC, every application I filled out asked for my legal status.

    You said "better let every employer in NC know". If it wasn't all of them, then you shouldn't have brought all of them into it.

    Then they broke the law as per my source.

    "In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire."

    Yeah, again, I'll point out again where I meant "lawfully", as I've said twice now.

    Maybe you should report your employer, as you're on the public record doubling down on them breaking federal law.

    Is that aiding and abetting? I'm not sure.
