Yes, we've already seen Pascal's Wager come up on this thread. Assuming that there is a God that is so maniacal and evil that he would endlessly torture all non-believers, everyone is screwed. You either burn in hell or go to a "heaven" where you endlessly lavish praise on the worst being in existence. Of course, it isn't as if your particular religion is the only one who believes in torment for non-believers, so you are actually taking the same risks that the atheists are.
Considering the displayed qualities of this God in his book and the attitudes shown by his worshippers...I choose hell.
He is the one who makes the rules, and it has nothing to do with choice. It has to do with available evidence. If he is willing to eternally torture (and yes, his rules, so his responsibility) someone for not believing when they never had any reason to believe, he is worse than any devil. Of course, this is entirely in keeping with the way he is described in the Bible, where he punishes people for the actions of others, sentences people to slavery and orders the murder of children.
How did you crunch those numbers? Using your "fantasy calculator"? The math tells us that atheists are effectively 'neutral' about all of the thousands of known gods, while not offending any via allegiance to the wrong one. You, however .... well, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes when it turns out you backed the wrong guy. And since you have only about a one in 300,000 chance of having picked the right guy, I think we can safely assume that you're in a far worse situation than the average atheist
And why haven't all of the Pascal's Wager people here joined Westboro Baptist Church? They say they are the only true Christians left. You may believe otherwise, but according to your same logic, what if you are wrong?
that's nowhere near the worst that will happen to Christians if they're wrong (about which god is actually in charge). and since they almost certainly are, I'd say it's a poor wager.
But why did you invent such a horrible place? No religious text describes hell like that, so it can only be your own invention.
This is the believer's worst nightmare. It's what drives a good proportion of their belief in the first place. The terror of the full stop.
And if you are right you will have plenty of time to praise a lousy god. Meanwhile, my decision is based on the information available to me, not threats. So no, it isn't lousy. Lousy would be pretending to believe something while having no honest reason to do so all in the hopes of pleasing a cosmic terrorist.
I'll play. 1) Evidence is anything which is measurable AND repeatable. 2) A supernatural invisible being.
