I found Facebook gave me a good excuse not to go to my 30th high school reunion. I caught up with the people I wanted to that were on Facebook, and I didn't have to travel.
Well, they technically are selling advertising based on your data. In terms of the Facebook apps (things like the personality tests), you are agreeing to allow the app have your data. I don't have any problem with it. I do have my information locked down, and have gone to settings and deleted a lot of ad-based settings.
I have been telling people to have NOTHING to do with Facebook and similar scam "social media' sites for over five years now. Get in bed with a snake? Then don't bitch if you get bitten!
I have no problem with Facebook or any of those sites, although Facebook is the only one I use. Folks just need to realize that the onus of protecting their personal data is on them, not on the companies folks willingly upload their personal lives to. Social media, the cloud, etc etc these are all instances of you releasing your information from your own control onto the computers and networks of people who aren't you. You lost control the minute you hit "send" or "post". Don't want the internet to know something? Don't tell the internet.
I still use Facebook. I check my page at least once daily. I never post/like anything that concerns politics. I've heard too many stories about people getting into trouble over Facebook comments. But, it's a great way to stay in contact with friends and family. That is all I use it for.
Much ado about nothing. Who cares if they categorize your data. Where is the real harm? You do need to be smart about what you put on it though. Especially if you are looking for a job. Many prospective employers will look at your account. If you are smart, it can work for you. The smart ones post pictures of themselves doing sports and charity work.
Never used it, didn't miss it, don't care what strangers have for lunch, have for a pet , or what their newborns look like....and cannot understand why anyone would...
I absolutely love it. I heard from students who I taught over 40 years ago and we met in ny.. I hear from students that I have taught not that long ago. I have connected with old college friends. I love the political discussions
My sister almost persuaded me to sign up but I stopped the second I saw they need to know my sex....since it 's not supposed to be a dating service I quit. I guess I'm just not that interested in giving "cyber space" another chance to get all my personal information
Why?.... to let the world know how many times I went to the bathroom or that the cat spit up??? My friends and family and I actually can look each other in the face and talk or, IF we care enough, we lift a big heavy phone and call who we REALLY want to talk to. I have a healthy ego , not a sick one that needs posting photos of myself every few hours...
Its a fun place to watch the hate people throw at you if you post positive Trump things. Liberals have heart attacks.
Its not that I don't trust it. I KNOW it sells my data- that was one of its main purposes from the get-go and I trust it to do that. I dont use it because its a huge waste of time.
Try making some Christian comments on LGBT sites and watch the people absolutely freak out, like you are the anti-Christ or something. You don't find that hilarious?
UH, if those "Christian" comments are something like being happy to hate gays then ya, you'll probably get the **** you deserve... ...instead of "Christian comments" they should try making intelligent or loving comments....
Trust wasn't an issue. Years ago, I was looking for a friend from high school and I was advised to try Facebook. I did. I didn't find my friend. Then I went through the horror of leaving Facebook. "We miss you." "Your friends miss you." They quit nagging me when I formatted my hard drive and installed a new operating system. Lately, they've started nagging again. "Your friend Bertrand has posted pictures of his trip to Canyonlands. Join Facebook to see the photos." I'm not biting Facebook.
Wow! As many times as you and I have disagreed on nearly everything, I must say that I wholeheartedly agree with you about Facebook! I loved the way you described your disdain for this whole mentally-crippled kind of venue. Your observation about some people needing to write breathless accounts about "how many times I went to the bathroom" and the cat spitting up were absolutely PRICELESS! Bravo!
sure I could post on facebook I do not like Trump or I do not believe in someones God, but not worth the hate I would get back from family and friends
