I lived there a long time ago. The lens is foggy but not opaque.

In the opening post, one of the videos said that the USA is no longer going to back dictators who suppress their people's right to vote. And they are going to withhold aid until a democratic regime takes over, and then the USA will swoop in and help that nation rebuild.

Yeah - they have been parroting that line for decades - "Spurring Democracy" and so on.
Now we just can't afford the aid and so that is as good excuse as any " :) Joke.

The reality -unfortunately - is that there are other nations willing to aid Nicaragua - and it is not like they have to pony up much to surpass what the US was giving them. China's "Belt and Road" initiative is coming to Nicaragua - and a number of other Centra/South American Nations - other than Venezuela of course which is a given - already taken over by Russia/China.

This is what "losing" looks like.

No. Bolton said the US would no longer tolerate authoritarian regimes in Latin America. He means only left wing governments. The US still supports death squads Colombia and Honduras, as well as the fascist regime in Brazil. The US has never tolerated the Left anyways.

You still believe US foreign policy is motivated by a yearning for democracy. That's like still believing in Santa Claus.

Well, I sent a message to then-president Obama about pushing for democracy in the world before the decline of the USA, or at least its power in the world.

Then we liberated Lybia... during the Arab spring. And sent weapons and aid to rebels in Syria.

So, yeah. I do think our foreign policy has been shaped by the idea of freeing the masses.

I would also like to note that the reason Honduras is considered a despot is because that government has suspended elections not once but twice. How do you wiggle out of that?
