The statue of Liberty is about "Liberty", not immigration. We don't call it the "Statue of Immigration", we call it the "Statue of Liberty", and we do so for a reason. The plaque, as I recall, was the winner of a fundraising contest long after the statue was erected. As beautiful and poignant as it is, it's not part of our country's founding, it was not part of the original design or intent, and has no meaning in the original context of the Statue of Liberty. I voted "keep the plaque", but only because the author won the contest fair and square (like Trump did.)
It was written by a Zionist. Most leftists openly condemn Zionists. The sentiment of the plaque actually represents the core idea behind Israel, but only for Jews. The poem was her dream for what a Jewish homeland in Israel would be. It was not written for the Statute of Liberty, but pirated from her Zionist advocacy poem.
For a huge number it was decided they were contagiously sick. If they did not have return money, they were sent to vastly overcrowded hospitals, where is they were not sick in a serious way, they soon would be from other actually sick and contagious people there. Many (many) immigrants were to die in that essentially quarantine camps. Overly, kindness was not part of how immigrants were treated.
Well, given that the official name of the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World" perhaps we should pack it up, return it to France and have them hold onto it until enlightenment returns........or the end of Trump's stay in office, whichever occurs first.....
No, really we should - according to most progressives - return to the standards it represents. No one but white people allowed in. For everyone, not just immigrants, totally eliminate social security, medicare, medicaid, aid for dependent children, SS disability, housing assistance and completely eliminate the federal income tax. The plaque should accurate have read: "White people only and we do not give a damn about white people either." The plaque does NOT say this is a good thing. The country wanted the cheapest labors with no rights whatsoever. So basically it is a corporate advertisement for massive numbers of desperate people who will have even their children work in the most dangerous conditions for a nickle an hour. "We want desperate people to work in our child labor sweatshops." That should make most liberals and progressives quite happy. Would you agree to all that - to return the good old days of the placing the plaque on that statute and the rules that existed at the time?
The level of ignorance in political slogans is astonishing. At the time of the Statute of Liberty ME Muslims were NOT allowed in the USA and soon literally 100% of Muslims from anywhere in the world were banned from entry into the USA! Yet there are people trying to use the Statute of Liberty to support bringing in Muslims, when the Statute of Liberty, among other things, stood for "NO MUSLIMS ALLOWED IN THE USA!"
WIDE open and unguarded stand our gates, Named of the four winds, North, South, East, and West; Portals that lead to an enchanted land Of cities, forests, fields of living gold, Vast prairies, lordly summits touched with snow, Majestic rivers sweeping proudly past The Arabs date-palm and the Norsemans pine A realm wherein are fruits of every zone, Airs of all climes, for lo! throughout the year The red rose blossoms somewhere a rich land, A later Eden planted in the wilds, With not an inch of earth within its bound But if a slaves foot press it sets him free! Here, it is written, Toil shall have its wage, And Honor honor, and the humblest man Stand level with the highest in the law. Of such a land have men in dungeons dreamed, And with the vision brightening in their eyes Gone smiling to the fagot and the sword. Wide open and unguarded stand our gates, And through them presses a wild motley throng Men from the Volga and the Tartar steppes, Featureless figures of the Hoang-Ho, Malayan, Scythian, Teuton, Kelt, and Slav, Flying the Old Worlds poverty and scorn; These bringing with them unknown gods and rites, Those, tiger passions, here to stretch their claws. In street and alley what strange tongues are these, Accents of menace alien to our air, Voices that once the Tower of Babel knew! O Liberty, white Goddess! is it well To leave the gates unguarded? On thy breast Fold Sorrows children, soothe the hurts of fate, Lift the down-trodden, but with hand of steel Stay those who to thy sacred portals come To waste the gifts of freedom. Have a care Lest from thy brow the clustered stars be torn And trampled in the dust. For so of old The thronging Goth and Vandal trampled Rome, And where the temples of the Cæsars stood The lean wolf unmolested made her lair. Muslims were considered dirty, unenlightened polygamists so were banned from the USA. Then, "Liberty" including liberty from rotten Muslims.
That means "WHITES ONLY" and absolutely NO Muslims or black people - and end all social and welfare programs, eliminate minimum wage, eliminate OSHA and eliminate child labor laws, plus eliminate the federal income tax. I'm surprised that you apparently support changes. The poem was written by a Zionist about her dream of Israel - for desperate Jews to escape from all the other evil people, races and religions of the world. On the Statute of Liberty, it mean desperate white people could technically escape from everyone else where unthinkable working and life conditions existed, but at least they were free and away from everyone else. Literally, in effect, the plaque is fundamentally a racist and bigoted declaration offering safe refuge in desperate situations to white European peasants.
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"- Lady Liberty Yeah but she didn't mean scroungers and heathens! Charlie got it right..-
The plaque is separate from the statue, it is affixed to the base and it was written as part of the fund raising effort to get the base built (France had long completed the statue itself). The words of Ms. Lazarus' sonnet "New Colossus" make no distinction of "white". This plaque wasn't affixed to the base until the 20th century. As mentioned above the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World - the torch lights the way to freedom, showing us the path to liberty". Immigration policy over the centuries is what it is, I don't equate it to the statue unless things get crazy, like after 1925 and what is happening now but, I'm always confident of changes for the better. Trump and his minions will be gone at some point in time, nothing is forever......
An American Jewish Zionist of German ancestry to be specific. The poem is her vision of the creation of the State of Israel long before existed for desperate Jews to be able to escape to - most of all to escape Muslims! The poem was NOT written for the statute and was not installed for nearly 20 years after she wrote it, which was before the Statute of Liberty was put up. She had been dead for 15 years when it was installed. It was not written for the Statute of Liberty, the author did not offer it for that usage, and the poem actually is advocacy for the creation of the nation of Israel. The irony of the ignorance of so many quoting that plaque is both alarming and humorous - and indicated a real concern of how could a democracy really function when the majority of the population are so ignorant and uneducated? This is what, in the past anyway, teaching US history and civics classes for patriotism and knowledge were considered so critical to require. That has, of course, essentially been eliminated and replaced with PCism and rewritten history declaring how evil the USA was.
At the time the plaque was installed, literally 100% of all Muslims were officially banned from the USA by Theodore Roosevelt. I'm going to be continuing to post that FACT. When the plaque was installed on the Statute of Liberty, there was in force a 100% ban on ANY Muslim allowed to enter the USA by presidential order. I gather you support a total ban on Muslims entering the USA, correct?
I want people with enough personal drive and genuine belief in this country that they are willing to relocate here and help us start rebuilding what was once admired about this nation. Too many of the (*)(*)(*)(*) born here lack both.
Did this ever represent the USA? I don't see it as being very true today, mainly because we're a mature nation now, not a collection of small colonies or states with a bunch of land waiting to be settled and a society still needing to be built.
Oh lord, you can't be serious? For the record, NO I do not support a total ban on Muslims entering the USA. If you look at Roosevelt's immigration act of 1907 you will also see the ban included "idiots, imbeciles, the feeble minded & professional beggars". It makes one wonder what in years the ancestors of many posters here entered the country, LOL. You will also note that I wrote in my post - "Immigration policy over the centuries is what it is, I don't equate it to the statue unless things get crazy, like after 1925 and what is happening now but, I'm always confident of changes for the better." - in other words these "bans" will eventually be gone once level headed people are back in place. I'm always confident in the future.......
It should have been taken down in 1939. The U.S. Government Turned Away Thousands of Jewish Refugees, Fearing That They Were Nazi Spies In a long tradition of persecuting the refugee, the State Department and FDR claimed that Jewish immigrants could threaten national security. But even with millions of European Jews displaced from their homes, the United States had a poor track record offering asylum. Most notoriously, in June 1939, the German ocean liner St. Louis and its 937 passengers, almost all Jewish, were turned away from the port of Miami, forcing the ship to return to Europe; more than a quarter died in the Holocaust. Heck the statue was not even intended for us. The Statue was originally designed for the Suez Canal in Egypt.
