All wells foul over time. This can take years in some cases, decades in others. It depends on the Total Organic Carbon (food) available in the groundwater.

Prior to putting in a well the groundwater flow is normally very slow. Perhaps a 5 or 6 feet per year or less in some cases. Think of a bug sitting on sand particle in the interstitial void space. At a groundwater flow rate of 5 feet per year and a TOC of a few parts per million the poor guy is not getting much food.

As soon as you pop in a well what happens. The movement of water past that point increases by many orders of magnitude - and with it the supply of TOC/Food. Now the bacterial have enough food to multiply and build cities (known as biofilm) and that is what they do. Over time the void spaces within the soil fill up with biofilm over time which restricts the rate that water can flow into the well.

These biofilm's can stretch many meters back into the formation. Interesting things happen via bioaccumulation. The redox potential changes (becoming more anaerobic) as you go further into the formation. This dictates which metals tend to accumulate. If it is a very old well - and you take drill core samples in a linear fashion at various distance out from the borehole you will find that different metals have accumulated at different spacing. It is quite an interesting phenominon.

So once again. Well cleaning ( IF done properly) is a good thing - but is only required if the flow rate from the well has decreased (or in some other instances related to fouling).
