The investigators would have had to go to the judge and explain where they wanted to search, what they wanted to search for. And they would have to demonstrate that there was probable cause to believe that a crime had been committed and that evidence of that crime was at that specific location - so in this case, at Mar-a-Lago. The agents would have had to be specific as to why they think that evidence is there and why they think it's evidence of a crime.

Something like this, where a former president is involved, is likely to get extra scrutiny from the judge signing off on the warrant, of course, but also extra scrutiny at the FBI and, of course, at the Justice Department - something that's likely to need signoff from the senior levels of the Justice Department itself. I asked the Justice Department whether the attorney general, whether Merrick Garland approved of this step. The Justice Department is not commenting. But again, this is a big step to take against a former president - in this case, former President Donald Trump.'

If this was political they wouldn't have done it over two years before the election. They would have maximized the benefit at the last moment. Doing this now is useless unless they get a conviction.

In this case, they must know they have conviction for a felony. Otherwise they never would have done it. That would only help trump and they know it.

Yes, I recognize the legal challenge that application of this law to a president would garner (since qualifications are set in Constitution). But the idea that a candidate would have to litigate this is during a campaign is in my view a "blockbuster in American politics."

 

Just to be clear here, unless you happen to be the judge who signs that search warrant, neither you, nor I are entitled to that information. The person who needs to be convinced that there is probable cause/a reasonable belief that a crime has been committed, has a robe and jurisdiction. He does not have to tell you or anyone else at PF, and we don't need to engage in speculation for your benefit.

 

Even the Repiublican senate confirmed the Trump-Russia connection.

Denying that connnection is embracing a wild conspiracy theory.

Most Republicans embrace that conspiracy theory, which indicates something about their judgement.

I'm no lawyer by a long shot, but I think there's more than enough evidence to charge him, at the very least with dereliction of duty, conspiracy,, and sedition. However, I think this last one that resulted in the "raid" is probably about documents he stole.
