Deadly accidental shootings on the rise in South Florida

Serious accidental shootings that once were relatively rare tragedies in Broward and Palm Beach counties have been happening with alarming frequency over the past two years.

Since 2010, nearly a dozen such shootings in the region have left a victim critically injured or dead a dramatic increase from prior years when such cases typically were reported only once or twice annually, according to police and media reports.

Amid the string of cautionary tales is the heartache of a Deerfield Beach father, who forgot his handgun in his pickup truck on an afternoon in February 2010. His 10-year-old son found the gun and shot and killed his 11-year-old brother.

The son of a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy shot and wounded his brother inside their home in the Acreage in March.

Most recently, a Fort Lauderdale man killed his 17-year-old brother with a bullet to the head on Sept. 3. He told police he thought the gun's safety mechanism was engaged when he pulled the trigger.

All of the casualties were preventable, gun experts said.

"Accidental discharges don't really happen. It's a negligent discharge," said Will Farrugia, a South Florida firearms instructor. "If you don't pull the trigger, the gun will not go off."

At the heart of most of the cases is a lack of education on gun safety, Farrugia said.

"If you're going to buy a gun, it's a bit like buying a car," he said. "Get some instruction first."

Of 11 serious accidental shootings reported in Broward and Palm Beach counties, all but one involved a semi-automatic handgun.

In many of the cases, the shooters told authorities they thought the handgun was unloaded because they had removed the pistol's magazine.

The shooters, however, failed to realize that although the rounds in the magazine have been separated from the gun, one round remains in the gun's chamber, ready to be fired. This is what happened in the death of 13-year-old Daniel Torres, of Hollywood, in April 2010.

Torres' best friend, Jeff Dilworth, 14, told police he saw Torres remove the magazine from a 9mm handgun. Dilworth said he then grabbed the gun, which belonged to his mother, to make sure it was completely unloaded.

Dilworth said while checking the gun, he pulled the trigger as Torres walked in front of him, killing the teen.

Dilworth later pleaded no contest to a manslaughter charge and was ordered into a rehabilitation program. His mother, Shari Edwards, 51, was charged with culpable negligence, for leaving her firearm in a place where it was accessible to a minor. In February, she was sentenced to four years' probation.

In an unusual shooting inMiramar, police are still trying to determine whether a 2-year-old boy pulled the trigger on a Glock 9mm handgun, killing his mother, Julia Bennett, 33.

Bennett's boyfriend told police he brought the handgun to Bennett's apartment during a visit in April and placed the gun under a couch cushion. He said he walked out of the living room for a few minutes and returned to find the child holding the gun.

The boyfriend said the gun went off as he tried to take the weapon out of the child's hands.

Bennett died from a gunshot wound to the back.

"Every gun manufactured today comes with a lock," said Mike Caruso, owner of the Delray Shooting Center in Delray Beach , who expressed frustration over cases in which children were able to get their hands on a firearm. "I just don't understand the lack of common sense."

LISBON - The Columbiana County Sheriff's Department is investigating two accidental shootings, both which caused injuries, on Saturday.

Deputies were called to Forbes Road near the border of Madison and Yellow Creek townships after a man reported being shot in the woods. The man, whose injuries were minor, spoke with deputies along the road later. His fiancee was taking him to a hospital to be checked.

In his description to deputies, the man said he was unsure if the person firing knew he was there or not. He yelled, and they stopped. Although he was not identified by deputies, the man who was struck reportedly did not live on the road. A woman identifying herself as his fiancee said they were at a nearby home belonging to her boss.

Chief Deputy Allan Haueter said late Saturday the investigating deputies had informed him the man was checking his tree stand, and at first it was believed to have been children shooting. But Haueter said it was later determined to have been someone target shooting and not using a good backstop.

Deputies did emerge from the woods with one man, but it was unknown if he was involved in the shooting or only a witness. A group of people could be seen from the road in the woods near a campfire.

The matter remains under investigation, and the prosecutors office was contacted regarding what happened.

Deputies also reported an accidental shooting earlier in the day at a Hawkins Road home in Fairfield Township. Haueter said the woman was reportedly leaving to go out hunting, and the gun discharged shooting her in the leg. Her condition was not known Saturday night

That's too funny. The woman got her gun but the gun didn't want to go out into the woods. So the gun got mad and shot her so that it could stay home.
