That is if they chose the white way, our way. Not their way of course.....
Typical white Australian approach and justification....

Point somewhat taken. Affirmative action is not necessarily rooted in notions of racial superiority. It is trying to redress damage done by these ideas in the past, but it doesn't necessarily reflect a present belief in these ideas. Domination, sure, however, I do not think the differences in "direction" are by any means irrelevant. Equating the two is still misleading as it belies their fundamental differences in nature. I also disagree that minorities will invariably get the raw end of the deal. Surely circumstances could arise where this is not the case even if historically this is not true. Although people on this board seem to complain about Aboriginal benefits quite a lot.

I never claimed that I think it's a good idea for a few politicians and a judge to decide what's best for Aboriginals.

It really depends on how you are defining racism. I would say that the most fundamental aspect of racism is a belief in the superiority of certain races. As such affirmative action might be said to be discriminatory, but not necessarily racist.

    definition : of Racism
Affirmative action does not fit here. Affirmative action is not because they believe " that people's qualities are influenced by their race and that the members of other races are not as good as the members of your own, or the resulting unfair treatment of members of other races"

therefore as affirmative action DOES NOT fit the definition of racism, how can it be racist. Even believing that it is is not in itself racist, just stupid, childish and dangerous.

Now, besides exercising it, what the hell has this to do with FREE SPEECH

Now I will wait for someone to say giving a job to an aboriginal rather than a more qualified person is saying that they are not as good and is racist. So I can shoot that down in flames toooooooooooooooooooo.

Can't see how sorry. You're going to have to explain.

I would never had an opportunity to know aboriginal people like I do if it weren't for affirmative action. It certainly opened my eyes up. In effect it dispelled those silly stereotypes and prejudices. You certainly learn a whole new perspective from the experience.

Would someone please provide substantiated evidence of Aboriginals coming under the "Flora And Fauna Act Of Australia", and the actual ramifications of this. There appears to be a substantial amount of urban mythology surrounding this issue.

Bit of house keeping needed here. "Affirmative action" is a term created by the Keating government for a program to legally enforce companies to employ more women. Just another one of his many discriminatory laws. Nothing to do with aborigines or free speech.

Rubbish! Employers for the most part only care about a prosective employee's qualifications, experience and past employment record. They don't care about a persons race.

Who is "they"? There are plenty of people from dozens of different racial backgrounds who are on the bottom rung.

The Hanson era exposed the aboriginal industry for what it was, corrupt and rotten to the core.

So you can't even give credit when it's due.

OH dear! BB you don't actually believe this do you?!! For goodness sake! I know lots of men who have gone out with aboriginal girls, myself included, and no one has ever had to get permission to do so from anywhere or anyone. Yours is an absolutely outrages claim to make. I am sure you know better.

I`m involved with people who`ve done extensive research on this matter. To date, no one has been able to find any substantial evidence to support the urban myth of the intent, cause and effect, of the "Flora And Fauna Act of Australia" as it`s being bandied about in some circles.

Another lie that is currently accusing defenceless dead people of racism, is the spin on the "White Australia Policy", but that`s another matter.

Yet another lie is the BS purporting the Eureka Stockade to have been a leftist rebellion against tyranny. Nothing could be further from the case. The Eureka Stockade incident, was manned by self employed business people, who were objecting to the outrageous operating costs, placed on them by greedy government. Just goes to show, how easy uneducated, impressionable people can be manipulated.

Back to the subject of Aborigines. The above points aside, intentional or not, European settlement has had a crushing effect on Aborigines in so many ways. For any understanding of history (as opposed to fantasy), factors such as the conditions and mindset of the time have to be taken into account. All humanity, in all times were / are products of our environment. Although we shouldn`t forget the past, it can be counter productive, to aid division by feeding more fuel to the flames of hate and resentment.

I believe the resentment of the broader community by Aborigines, to be a major obstacle in them attaining a constructive mindset of personal responsibility, and attainment of personal potential. We can`t change the past, but if we don`t take responsibility for the effects of our own attitudes, and their effect, we are worse than those who went before us.

Aboriginal people don't just get a "few extra" government benefits over other Australians. Read all the link carefully, and you might be very surprised "what" they really get over ordinary Australian citizens.
    http://australia.gov.au/topics/benefits-payments-and-services/indigenous-payments-and-services

How many poor and disadvantaged Australians live in crappy housing estates surrounded by poverty, violence and drug abuse? They don't get paid to send their children to year twelve and beyond; special employment is not created for them whereby no one else can apply for those jobs, and they are forced to comply with job network providers to recieve their government welfare benefits. It doesn't seem like poor and disadvantaged Australians warrant any sympathy or compassion who are doing it even harder than the Aboriginal people who are actually getting special treatment and additional financial benefits. Tell me again how hard-done-by Aboriginal people are, when they are the recipients of all the special treatment and financial benefits that Australians in the same circumstances DON'T get?

Politicians who introduced Affirmative Action & the discrimination Act have turned an individuals circumstances into a competition based on race, rather than the individuals actual need.

Come on catter, we have seen thier way. Allowed to live traditional Aboriginal lifestyles in rural outback communities with tens of $billions in funding, and within 20 years the communities turned into shanty towns and slums - with their children uneducated and disease ridden. Is this what you really want?

Not many cultures have been immune from settlement from the invading forces, and the all original inhabitants through the centuries have had to deal with problems, and come to terms with the new system. Why the hell are the Aborigines any different to any other cultures who have been invaded and settled? I certainly don't think the invaders took over flowers and chocolates to offer the locals when the invaded and re-settled in their countires. Would not the other cultures that were invaded have also suffered rape, murder, and being displaced from their land, by the invaders. I am sick to death of Aborigines whinging and whining that they are the only culture that been hard done by. Maybe if they stopped being a bunch of alcoholic no-hopers and educated themselves more, they would realise they are not the only culture that has suffered through invasion and settlement. I am so over those people whinging and whining for government hand-outs all the time, and special benefits. In hindsight, I am really starting to think that doing away with the Flora & Fauna Act was not such a good thing for the benefit of all Australians.

In most cases so-called "affirmative action" only ends up
-) placing certain groups in institutionalized dependency on the government
-) creating the impression that people belonging to certain groups are somehow incapable of helping themselves or making it on a level playing field
-) creating resentment of groups who are seen as being "favoured"

I believe in the capacity of human beings.

Honestly, with regards to point 1: I'm not sure whether we are on the same page. Affirmative action does totally the opposite.

With regard to point 2: The heart and soul has been ripped out. It is about creating opportunity to a grossly disadvantaged people who do need support. It was raised on a very early thread the significant number of aborigines who now have degrees and trades. The momentum was created and no doubt gave aborigines the confidence and courage to expand on their qualifications as a consequences of the opportunities forth coming.

Regarding point 3: I have absolutely no issue with initiatives that support these people to fight their way out of being the least educated, least employed, highest mortality rate and highest incarceration rate. Petty jealousies and superiority complexes of the ignorant are where this resentment derives from.

I try to live in reality.

Affirmative action means that the daughters of Barack Obama are considered disadvantaged (just because of their race and gender) while the sons of a white mineworker are considered privileged (simply because of their race and gender).

No it doesn't mean either, that's rediculous. It means a collective race of people with similar features and culture and background who have been disadvantaged at the hands of especially government are doing it far worse than people of another similar features and culture. To deny positive actions in this regard is to deny racism ever existed.
There are exceptions but that doesn't mean that a large percentage of those people of similar features, backgrounds and culture are all functioning at the same level as Barack, Oprah, Will Smith etc etc. There are many exceptions in australian aborigines, which is demonstration that affirmative action is positively working.

There has been lots of activism around women's rights and still needs to be to ensure women are on a level playing field rather than being subjects of men to cook meals, clean the house and have babies! If nothing was ever done, that's all they would be doing!
