Well, I guess the next question is why would black couples or gay couples feel the need to highlight what's obvious... and further, if straight white couples were doing so, wouldn't they be questioned?

If searching for "black couple" resulted in mostly interracial couples, wouldn't someone question the results and wonder why there was no corrective action?

People's faith that googurl is 'unbiased' despite a preponderance of evidence, is...disturbing.

Huh? I don't think anyone is claiming Google is unbiased? I believe the biases and algorithm manipulations of Facebook, Google and Twitter have been "outed" more than once already.

The key is how these searches work. In simple terms, they’re not identifying images which actually contain the subject you searched for, they’re identifying web pages containing the phrase you searched for and returning the images in the context of that image. If you actually followed through to the pages from the image search, I suspect most under “straight couples” are pages discussing straight and gay couples because that’s the only context you’d need to use the phrase “straight couples”. When people are just talking about “straight couples”, they’ll generally just say “couples”.

Similar things apply in other examples. People will either write about “African American musicians” or just “musicians” in general (in the USA at least) so a search for “American musicians” is only going to pick up the first source. Similarly, anything written about “European people history” will generally refer to Europeans in other countries (which happened at lot). The phrase “European history” would refer to local things. Because of the western dominance of the English-speaking internet, the way none-Europeans will be written about and the wording used in those pieces will be different.

So, my core point remains; even if you do believe there is something wrong in how Google is returning the results of these searches, I’m proposing that the problem wouldn’t be with Google but with what we all choose to read and write on the internet and more generally how we all perceive the world around us, especially the elements that aren’t like us. If anything, these results present a reality that you maybe don’t want to accept, just not for the reasons you’re imagining.

not quite sure what I was supposed to be looking for but my result was basically a bunch of articles that wanted to tell me how much better same sex couples are than opposite sex and what can be learned from that. Image search was about 70% same sex pic's from a quick review.

Not quite sure what I was expecting to be honest.

Just searching "couples" got me to 90% straight couples as a result.

Really... I'm supposed to believe that when I google "European people history" with the millions of articles and images related to that topic, it makes sense that the majority of results feature people of African origin, with titles like "people of color in European art", because these items are either searched more or because of how they're tagged?

    Obvious B.S.

Just googled "European people history" and on page 1 all I got was one suggestion from "Europeon-people-history.com" and then all the other search results were from people like you moaning that all they got was about black people, and every image displayed on page 1 was of white Europeans, mostly artists . There was not one search result about black people or African people on page 1

Except that when everyone else makes the same image search, they're presented with a majority of images of black people.

Why don't you explain why my screenshot is different to everyone else's. Why don't you post the screen shot of your first page when searching for "European people history"?

Screenshot? All I see is text.

In order for me to post a screenshot I have to upload the file to an image hosting site, then copy the link to post here. Why would I bother when everyone else can just do a google image search and see what I'm seeing (except for you apparently)?

If not a screenshot, why don't you do a copy & paste which is what I did? Or are you going to say that you can't do that either.......

Here's something to try. Try just googling "couple" and see what you get.

Approximately half straight white couples, followed by black couples, followed by mixed couples, and then a few gay couples.

    So what's your point?

I'm not sure what definition of 'half' you are using. But when I do it it's an overwhelming majority of straight white couples with a sprinkling of others. In other words, the default image our culture has of a couple is a straight heterosexual couple. If you use the modifier 'straight' in an article or post about couples, you are most likely discussing homosexual couples.

Or, maybe the entire construct of reality is in a conspiracy against you.

Interesting, another person who has a unique google experience.

And are you saying there's a societal conspiracy to reinforce the image of white couples when someone thinks of a couple?

Regardless, the cultural image of a couple is a straight white couple. Any additional modifiers mean you are talking about something else. This is because we are SO white hetero centric.

You didn't explain anything, you told me what you think the reason is.

You can search Asian couple, black couple and get near exclusive results.

You can search random but specific things, like "blue lego", and get almost nothing but things directly related to that specific search.
