Currently the UK spends 1.5% of GDP on military assets and equipment, or £33,100,000,000, and 11,400,000,000 billion on foreign economic and military aid. 11 billion the 33.1 billion will be spent on the navy, 15 billion on the army and 7.1 billion on the airforce.
UK Defence Spending 1692-2015 - Charts

As you can see we spend to much on "aid" and not enough on assets. So what I think should be done is, 10.6 billion from the foreign aid budget to the defence budget, so the defence budget would be 43.7 billion, and the foreign aid budget would be 800 million, this in my view is a much better balance of government spending. The UK spends about 8 billion a year on the Afghanistan war, leaving around 25 billion a year to be spend on other operations, training and assets. I would leave Afghanistan under the current time table of 2014, so defence spending would only by 35.7 billion year. Over those 2 years the UK could spend 71.4 billion on assets, training and defence operations, most of the 71.4 billion would not be spent on assets, around 50 billion, leaving 21.4 billion to be spent on assets, up by 21.2 billion. This is why the UK is now having to cut so much, we are putting to much into foreign aid, and not enough in to defence. Then once we leave Afghanistan asset spending would go up by 4 billion, to 25.2 billion, and stay at that level for the next 6 years, giving a total asset budget of 97 billion over 8 years. I would spend 53 billion on the navy.

Atleat 20 billion of that money would go on the 2 aircraft carrier, and their aircraft. As I would spend unto 12 billion on these to carriers, to make them as good a we could, than spend 7 billion on 50 F35B's, 25 per carrier, and 20 helicopters, 4 Chinook's cost 350 million, 4 Apache's cost 250 million, 6 merlins cost 150 million and 6 Lynx Wildcat's cost 100 million.

I think most UK citizens would love to have a bigger RN, and that includes me.

The trouble was that as i have mentioned before, the previous goverment didnt spend enough on defence, when the times were good.....and now that they are not, the money that we could spend on defence, instead is being used to repay the countries debts. I seem to remember a year or two ago the previous defence minister gave out a huge list of additional Naval vessels the RN could of had (and it was a very impressive list) if things economically hadnt gone wrong.

I do agree, i think we spend far too much on foreign aid....i mean its ridiculous that we give nations aid, who are better off than we are....in fact we should receive aid! Personally i think our foreign aid budget should be around £5 only! :)

The unfortunate thing is that, out of all the time preiods in history, this is the one where the defence budget is unlikely to increase, due to the world economic crisis.

In fact a recent senior general said that the economic crisis was the main threat to the UK at the moment, and that Britain could only afford to build up its military again after the country is in an economically stable state.

But foreign aid doesn't help the country, I mean the minister in charge of the budget said he wastes 20% of the money because he can't find ways of spending it. I think yes we should give money to other countries when bad things happen their, and pay some people off so our companies can do more business in places like India, but not 11.4 billion. Cameron is just doing it to help his backers make more money, and mean while the UK loses jobs. The foreign aid money could also be used for cutting fuel duty by anything upto 20p, now I wonder how much better the economy would be then.

I am saying we have the money, and the military top brass knows it. I have seen then say Cameron is moving the military budget in the wrong way. And they 35 billion MOD black hole is that big because this government is cutting it by 8%. So much so the UK nolonger spends two percent of GDP on the military. Plus we still need more vehicles for the army, and more Eurofighter for the air force over the next 2 years.
