Washington DC - When comparing the Gender Apartheid that women in Saudi Arabia currently face with the Racial Apartheid that occurred 5 decades ago in South Africa it is clear that the women of Saudi Arabia have less freedoms and rights than black Africans had fifty years ago in South Africa. During the Racial Apartheid in South Africa, blacks were unable to vote, however, they had the right to play sports, drive cars, marry without permission, study and travel without permission, to receive medical attention without the permission of a guardian and the ability to obtain a job without a guardians consent.

All of the above mentioned rights are ones that are withheld from the women and girls who live under the Saudi Monarchy. Women are systematically discriminated against in all facets of their lives.

In addition, the women of Saudi Arabia do not have the right or ability to practice in sport of receive physical education, a basic human right as stated in the Olympic Charter. They are not able to exercise in public, play on sports teams, or play on national leagues. The Gender Apartheid they face in the country is severe and cannot continue. Their physical health depends upon their ability to exercise and be physically active. Saudi Arabia must end its Gender Apartheid laws so that women may enter society not only athletically but politically, socially, and economically.

The International Olympic Committee and the London Olympic Organizing Committee should not endorse the Saudi Monarchys Gender Apartheid policies. They must expel Saudi Arabia from the IOC and the London Games until Gender apartheid is dismantled. They must not discriminate against Arab women who are facing apartheid policies.

They did indeed. A tiny step in the right direction in the West Bank, giant steps back in Gaza. No wonder UNRWA canceled the marathon. The gender apartheid is alive and kicking everywhere in the Muslim world, virtually without exceptions.

You think? Women are guaranteed equal rights in Israel, just like they are in Scandinavia. Occasional cases of misogyny do take place, especially in the orthodox community. On the other hand cases of rape by muslim immigrants do take place on a regular basis in Scandinavia. Be careful, they want to treat your women in Scandinavia just like they treat them in Gaza...and based on the trend they will probably eventually succeed.

The world is increasingly taking notice of the turmoil brewing in Israel, where a growing culture war between the rest of Israeli society and the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, or "haredim", is becoming impossible to ignore. Simply stated, what the haredim want is gender apartheid: the forced segregation of the sexes in all public accommodations and the erasure of women from public life. And they've repeatedly proven that if they can't achieve this through the political process, they're perfectly willing to turn to intimidation and violence.

In the past few weeks, these stories have been coming fast and furious: a gynecology conference where women weren't allowed to speak; threats and harassment against women activists who refuse to sit at the back of public buses; religious neighborhoods which erect barriers on the sidewalk to segregate the sexes; an 8-year-old girl who has to run a gauntlet of insults and threats from ultra-Orthodox men to attend school; haredi protesters who absurdly dress up like Holocaust victims to protest their inability to segregate public streets.

In the town of Beit Shemesh, one of the flashpoints of this conflict, ultra-Orthodox Jews have been rioting in the streets, assaulting reporters and police officers. At one point, Israeli prime minister Netanyahu proposed dividing the city into two sections, one for for the ultra-Orthodox and one for everyone else. (Pity the liberal Jews who happen to live on the wrong side of that line when they draw it.) That plan seems to have been tabled after fierce criticism, but I suspect the idea isn't going to go away so easily.
