Because they know its harmful and that most people would not buy it. If people like them are allowed to go as far as they would like they would influence politicians to make it illegal not to buy their Frankenfood.

I think it is because just about all food products contain GMOs.

I am not real sure the problem with the American diet is the result of GMOs . The problem is the food people eat is not real food. Just read the labels.

I began to notice it more when i started reading the tags on my livestock feed. Most commercial beef, pork, and chicken are fed a diet to put on the most weight in the shortest amount of time at the least amount of cost. They feed them the stuff left over from food processing. Wheat middlins, soybean hulls...etc. They also overload the animals with antibiotics...and this will eventually bite us all in the butt.

This gives a guy like me an advantage. I can grow good feed for less money and raise my animals in a healthier environment. This reduces feed cost and reduces the need for medication. The meat is also has much better flavor. I can raise and put a whole pig in the freezer for about .60 cents a pound.

Cattle eat grass and silage...they come in pretty cheap also. But they are much more expensive to buy and do not reproduce nearly as fast.

My chickens are on pasture and they need little feed till winter.

But in the end it works out to be a lot cheaper for everyone.

they know many consumers will not buy it - not because its frankenfood - but because ignorant consumers think its frankenfood.

do you have any idea what GM can do for world health?

    take vitamin A deficiency:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_A_deficiency

thanks to GM - there is real potential to address this issue.

    true.

a lot of the problems relate to how animals are fed - there have been numerous cases in latin america where the impact of hormones fed to livestock (to make them fatter) have had public health impacts - such as girls as young as 2 years old menstruating.

the use of antibiotics has also impacted significantly on our health ...

as well as the crap that animals get fed ... mad cow disease was one of the worst examples of where that can lead.

and the nutritional value of your chickens and beef will be less fat content, but higher in omega 3 - far better for your kids brains and growth generally than what we buy on the supermarket shelf!

When are people like you going to learn that man has only made things worse?......every time they invent this or that drug or whatever and its touted as the best thing, then decades later we hear that it is causing cancer or some other problem. You are so naive......you are one of those people that believe whatever companies like Monsanto says......it’s really true that a sucker is born every minute.

If people would only consume foods that are good for them and not the junk foods that they love and would rather eat there would be no one with vitamin A deficiency. Not to mention the fact that much of the foods that are grown are grown on depleted soil because of over use......in the Bible the Israelites were commanded to rest the land on the seventh year. I have even met a woman from Cuba who told me that her father did that.

Man created his own problems and it is silly to believe that the ones who created the problem are going to solve them.

do you eat wheat based bread, or only spelt based bread?

do you buy food from the supermarket?

    drink pasteurised milk?

what treatments would you accept for an infection?

would you accept a blood transfusion?

    do you walk everywhere?

do you live in a house with indoor plumbing?

    do you use plastic?

    and so on ....

You know, I tend to believe this. I need only look no further, than how FDR and the Democrats sold the Hemp Stamp Tax Act of 1938, to W.R. Hearst and Andrew Mellon, on behalf of timber and oil interests, to also expand prison cartels, which are a source of considerable profiteering.

Since then, it's been really uphill, to get any of the millions of dyslexic or autistic Americans, to admit a resource was swung, to contraband, right as a hemp processor was debuted, which would make hemp the leading cash crop, in the world.

With an estimated 25,000 products, including those for food, clothing, shelter, and accessories, hemp resourcing would also enable leeching pollution, from fields, by constructive crop rotation.

The US also has been slow, to develop algae and switchgrass, for biomass, while every other day, on TV, I can see some yutz rapping about how ethanol has diverted corn.

IMO, Americans can't take much more genetic damage. We are going to lose our water, as well.

This is a good post and I agree that not all GM foods are bad. If they can prevent blindness in kids with GM rice I am all for it.

GM food is better than no food....much better.

When you look out your window and only see bricks and concrete i can understand how you could disagree with a hillbilly that looks out the window and sees trees and grass.

Without advances in agriculture and increased productivity you will starve...or end up eating each other.

There are just too many of yall out there to feed without mans intervention.

Some things need to be changed I will admit that...but it ain't all bad. If you are facing a crop loss because of some insect... you spray. If you do not get enough rain you irrigate... if you can.

If the climate changes...crops MUST change with it.

Some of the old ways are the best ways however.

That is false.....there is more than enough land for people in the world to feed themselves.....the problem is that many people are not able to grow their own food because of being displaced by war, and famine that is usually manmade.

If true, why not tweak the genetic modification to induce infertility in the first generation and start sales to Cambodia, Kenya, India and many other countries with population growth issues?

I'm not sold on GM - I think there are issues .... some relate to political/economic factors, and others relate to the fact we don't know what the ramifications may be in many instances - especially cross phyla examples ...

but, as with everything else, it is important not to throw out the potential that GM can bring because we are afraid of things that are new and different.

well ... it depends by what you mean by land ... not all land is arable, and much of the arable land is in areas which in the last half century have given way to cities - and so is no longer used for food production.

also, scientists argue that with climate change, one of the most important areas of research (in agriculture - and GM) is in the area of drought tolerance.

I did not say that all lands were arable I said there is enough land for people in the world to feed themselves. Not every arable land is being used to grow food and everyone who is able to use it are aloud. Even in the U.S much of the land people are not allowed to use it. Governments and others have become a stumbling block for people's rights and independence by preventing them to taking care of themselves via the right to own land.

People still have the right to own land...at least where I live and a lot of the land being owned it used for nothing.

I have also read that the people of the U.S. throw away 40% of the food that is produced for sale in the States.

Not all people are cut out to be farmers and it is a very hard business to start. I haven't made any profit yet but we eat well and the grocery bill is very low. Every penny that comes in from my enterprise goes back into it ... plus some money i get from my job. If your family has not been buildiing it for generations it is very expensive. It is getting close to supporting itself and i may even see a profit within the next year or so.

You not only need land you also need equipment. You not only need land you need fences. You not only need fences you need outbuildings. The list goes on and on.

    Above all....you need rain.

The first genetically modified plant was produced in 1983 which means that to prove it causes genetic infertility in the forth generation a study group and control group had to be started in 1983 and four generations had to be produced by now. That would mean that by the forth generation, you would have to have an alleged fertile group by today or that each fertile group would have to have been fertile by the age of 10.

Of course they are feeding massive amounts of soy product to mice to prove this which I am sure is a naturally preferred food of mice. Hell, I don't even eat soy products so shall stay mass macho. LOL

mice usually live to be about one and a half years old...you do the math.

But it does seem that they would cause infertility in other animals (livestock) and we would see a reduction in production from GM foods being fed to chickens and pigs. Pigs reproduce at one year and it is very reasonable to get two littles a year. They have a geastation period of about 3 months, three weeks, and three days ...give or take a few days for different breeds.

A chicken can take as little as 4 months to mature and can lay an egg every day and a half with the chicks coming in about 21 days.

Most people over time have been condiction to depend on others to provide the food they need.

Food that they did not produce themselves.....if they produced the food they needed it would not be so liberally wasted.

I've seen some women in my Country who farm and I'm talking about doing it with basic hand tools.....I myself have done it all it takes is a little will and determination.

In my Country some small farmers only have basic hand tools and they are able to do the job and its good exercise....if you saw some of those men they are muscular and well defended. My grandfather was a farmer, and I was told that he once split a bamboo in two with his fist.

Ah, the same old study pops up time and again, and with a false headline. First, it was in the form of a research report, but not in a recognized scientific journal.. Second, never did it state that GMO maize cause infertility in mice. Third, they specified that this was not applicable to humans and the study needed to be verified. Forth, statistically significant differences occur in practically all feeding studies.

Also, it's from naturalnews.com. Never a good sign. You know when Penn and Teller circulated that petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide? The kind of people who actually signed it are the same ones whose opinions you get on naturalnews.com
