    Lucas the Prince of Darkness
Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner "How can you tell one switch from another at night? They all look the same. " - "He replied, "It does not matter which one you use, nothing happens !"

The Lucas motto: "Get home before dark."

Lucas is the patent holder for the short circuit.

Lucas - Inventor of the first intermittent wiper.

Lucas - Inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.

The three position Lucas switch - Dim, Flicker and Off.

The Original Anti-Theft Device - Lucas Electrics.

Lucas is an acronym for Loose Unsoldered Connections and Splices

Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency.

"I have had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never had any trou..."

If Lucas made guns, wars would not start.

Back in the 70's, Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which did not suck.

Q: Why do the British drink warm beer? A: Because Lucas makes their refrigerators

Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone.Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb. Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit

This is my current pony, and it's not much on looks...so I need nice scenery in a photo
to compensate...this is my actual bike taken at a ride in North Carolina.

I just restored an 89 Camaro RS. I have it sold but am driving it a while to make sure it's OK.

I still have a 95 Z28 and drive an 07 Stang for my daily driver

I'll be looking for my next project vehicle. It's an outlet for me

I used to work for a motorcycle dealer in St. Louis who sold British bikes back in the day - BSA, Triumph, and Norton. Everyone who worked there rode, and most of us rode British bikes, and were very familiar with them because he did a land-office business in mail-order replacement parts. We all knew the stories behind Lucas electrics, and had all suffered a breakdown or two because of electrical issues.

We were watching the Indy 500 one Memorial Day back in the mid-80's, and one of the cars drops out of the race with engine problems. They try to get him back in the race, but by the time they do, he's lost so many laps that he'll never regain them - his only hope is to try to at least finish the race and collect some prize money.

Anyway, Chris Economaki is down in pit row, talking about how the car was suffering from a problem with the computer that controlled the engine, and how the pit crew had to replace this module to get the car back in the race. He holds up this metal box about the size of a car audio amplifier by the wires coming out of it, and on the front in big red letters, it says "Lucas".

We laughed until we cried! :D

You're very short, Herk. Can you not get to sit at the front?

    Nice bike though.

I loved the Landrover but it cost the earth to maintain unless you do it yourself. £600 for a frequently required service which if you don't have it done, it just packs up. And I hear they have resolved the synchromesh issues...2000 for a gear box because I knew the mechanic and they did it at cost..

    Great fun though.

And the Alfa Romeos were not chosen by me, I don't care about cars. But it isn't a bad feeling to know you can get out of trouble that fast if you need to. Plus those twits who sit beside you at the lights and then try to take off faster...hehhh not gonna happen (unless maybe you're on a bike...)

I was more along the lines of BB Gun...than Top Gun, riding a motorcycle when I first started out.

He rode a Kawasaki GPZ-900R in Top Gun, but I have no doubt that movie inspired a lot of guys
to buy sport bikes...in addition to playing shirtless volleyball.

did you know that off hand or did you recognize it from the pic? either way, i'm worried you're going to start singing to random hot chicks in bars when it's not karaoke night and following them into the powder room.

Off-hand knowledge, I was just way into motorcycles in my early 20's and
that particular bike in Top Gun was one of the earlier super-bikes Japan started
    into production.

Talk to me Goose...talk to me.

In Mission: Impossible 2 Tom Cruise rode a black Triumph Speed Triple, because he wanted to be cool like this guy --

Actually, that's not true - no one could ever be as cool as Steve Mc! :)

I am really amazed and pleased that there is so much discussion about motorcycles. My dad had an accident on an Indian in college and prohibited the purchase for me. High school kid that I was, I bought a Suzuki and hid it in a neighbors garage, until I got caught and had to sell it. Motorcycles do scare me a bit especially in heavy freeway traffic, which is why I like convertibles.

I respect motorcycle owners. BBDO is the second largest advertising agency on the planet. Their San Francisco offiice is run by a Harley lover, and the stories about their activities in Northern California are legendary!

When I graduated from college my mother bought me a new 1999 Dodge Dakota Sport as a graduation gift. It was what I wanted.

In 2008 I was ready for a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which I REALLY love. The design, the features, and four wheel drive.

I happened to see that Dakota today after three years. I recalled late one night on a rural freeway driving on fumes. I took a "no services" exit and found myself next to five wolves devouring an animal, (maybe a deer). If I had gotten out of the truck, I think I would have been desert. Fortunately, I had enough fuel to drive on to another exit open with gas. I owe that Dakota.

She is 12 years old now, and in the hands of a nice looking older Hispanic couple who seemed to be caring for it. I think my wife is wrong to tease me about loving vehicles. When you have been through tough times with a friend, you are going to have feelings of appreciation. I buy American, and consider drivers of foreign vehicles unpatriotic.

My 4 wheel daily driver is a '96 Jeep Cherokee with 4 1/2" lift kit.
I just hope anyone from this forum who doesn't like me because of my politics, refrains from
running me off the road; as I'm posting actual vehicle photos...but I suppose I post
    at my own risk.

God, what a beautiful piece of machinery! I feel your pain, flounder - I really do!

If you're like me, part of you hopes that whomever took it has the ability to appreciate what a mechanical work of art it is and take care of it - if for no other reason that perhaps, someday, someone else will get a chance to enjoy it. But, like in the case of my stolen motorcycle, part of you probably hopes that whomever stole it is mangled horribly in a fiery accident, and spends the remainder of their life in pain and agony!

That's what really and truly sucks, is having a vehicle stolen! If I had destroyed my motorcycle in an accident, I'd have no one to blame but myself. But having it stolen, and knowing that someone else is enjoying the benefit of all my hard work and hard-earned cash, is almost unbearable at times.

Every once in a while I'll be in my little office, and spot my helmet on the shelf in the closet, or my leather jacket hanging. My wife can't understand why I'm in a funk for the next few hours...

I really had it tough, they found it stripped in Brooklyn a week later, everything gone,,engine, seats,,dash,,everything...It was a wreck, I could hardly look...
I got the money from the Ins company and bought a 427 68 corvette. Nice car but nothing like the 64,,different body style..The last one I had was a 82, white with red leather,,I got a photo of that too. I'll post both when I get to my other computer...
To see her stripped killed me,,,just killed me....Yup,,I really can see being entirely depressed, you just cant replace a great vehicle, they have their own life...I never got over it,,,I still grieve....

ALL THAT SO SOME S.O.B. CAN GRAB A FEW BUCKS!!!!

1979 Coupe de Ville, black over maroon leather, bought as a $300 beater 15+ years ago...had a 425 engine, a blown-up TH400, and a bunch of little problems. I slowly rebuilt it...including a trip from MA to Arizona, with the original 180,000 mile 425 and a $100 junkyard transmission. Not long after, the engine croaked...the previous owner had neglected it badly. I took the sludge off the oil pan with a paint scraper, the valve covers required two days in an engine shop's hot tank before they were clean.

It then got a 542 stroker engine...ported heads & offset-ground crank from a 1971 Eldorado 500, a 1973 Fleetwood 472 block, about 500HP and 550lb/ft of torque in front of a TH400 rebuilt with TH475 (HD truck and motorhome transmission) internals. Also got a full Hotchkiss suspension, Impala SS steering box, big swaybars, and rear disc brakes. Ran mid-12-second 1/4 mile on drag radials, 11.97 on nitrous (with 2.73 gears!)...in a 4500lb car that looked like a nice stock Caddy with dual exhaust, and I put LOTS of work into that look!

It has an Edelbrock intake, but all the logos are ground off, it's painted Cadillac Blue to match the engine. Ignition is a high-power HEI, with high-capacity wires in black, the cap & coil fogged flat black (it was red) to look stock. All the vacuum lines are in place, the A/C is intact (and functioning!), the dual 3" exhaust uses Dynomax catalysts, big turbo mufflers, and a pair of glass-packs as resonators to quiet the huge engine.

A few years ago, I swapped from the TH475 to a TH-200-4R overdrive transmission...still looks like a stock de Ville, has the full interior loaded with pretty much every option: fiber-optic light monitors, Quadraphonic AM/FM/8-track (now running a CD changer in the trunk), power leather seats, automatic climate control, tilt & telescoping column...everything except wire wheelcovers. Owned it a very long time and never plan to sell it!

I've owned a lot of excellent cars from Mercedes, Cadillac, a Healey 3000 and a Bentley but the car I miss the most was the first car I ever owned. It was a litigimate 1934 Ford 5-window hot rod with a Lincoln V8. The roof was chopped to minimum legal height with only a 7" tall windshield, no fenders with big rear tires and small front tires. It was a primer paint job waiting for final body work and it cost $200 in 1968. I was drafted just weeks after buying it and sold it for $200 before going into the Army. I'd easily give $5000 today to have that car back.
