Insurance is becoming less of a problem. The issue now is that hospitals are starting to buy up all those little doctors offices, and eachother. In a way they are becoming mini-monopolies and are gaining influence over insurance companies rather than vice versa. Of course we've also had the issue of people being locked into insurance from their jobs rather than plans they bought on their own. This limited competition, but the ACA is supposed to correct that. However with the influence of hospitals rising it may not matter.

I don't know about insurance being any less of a problem, but the point about mergers and acquisitions is a good one for sure. My current city of residence, Sioux Falls, is virtually dominated by two big players - Avera and Sanford. It's as bad as our political system when it comes to choice..

Anyway, I just want to see insurance go back to being insurance, i.e. covering just emergencies and not costing a fortune in premiums, with regular costs being reasonable and affordable the way they used to be.

The question was about health insurance, not insurance companies...

    Who is bobov?

I suppose, since the goal of insurance companies is to make money... By selling insurance.

    Why?

It works fine in other countries so what are you really complaining about?

    - - - Updated - - -

    No you cannot.

But you are free to get another, higher paying job.(roll-eyes)

That is the joy of single payer - far less insurance company rip-offs.

With 47% of the public not paying federal taxes, why would you want to stick the other 53% of the population paying for everyone? Do you think that's fair?

Canada has what I believe is being considered 'single payer'. Our health care system is absolutely horrible and we pay through the nose for it as well - just in taxes.

I looked this up a while back and the health care cost here is $6000 per person, so for a family of four we look at 24,000 in taxes annually. That does not cover medications, which have to be self insured separately, and it does not cover eye or dental care.

For that we have a chronic shortage of doctors. In my forties I went 7 years without a family doctor as my first had passed on and there simply weren't others taking patients. I have sat in hospital hallways many many times for 72 hours or longer waiting to get elderly parents into emergency as well. We almost lost my dad for lack of treatment 'while' we were in emergency.

Canadians have news agencies that have shown it is easier for the destitute to get treatment in the USA than in Canada.

    Make everyone pay income tax.

    Problem solved.
