Here's how the Russians targeted social media posts to influence the 2016 election, according to a n

    "
    • The report showed how a Russian disinformation group used Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Instagram to target specific groups with curated content meant to anger them and drive their voting behavior.
    • The activity started as a test in Russia in 2009, according to a research report given to CNBC on Monday.
    • The report was compiled for the Senate Intelligence Committee by Oxford University's Internet Institute shows how Russian operatives used social media to exploit a wide range of demographic groups, including LGBT voters, conservative voters, African-Americans and Muslims, among others.
      "

    • Read more here:

    • (Sorry, I was going to give you the Post article, but I keep forgetting that it's behind the paywall!)

    • Trump supporters keep trying to minimize the Russian attempts to drive votes in the US by trying to limit the discussion to a small overt advertising campaign.

    • Some of the folks who pushed that line here were the very same people who liked, shared and promoted Russian generated fake news sites that were designed to push Trump's candidacy by Russian intelligence. Many others simply overtly reference Russian propaganda sites.

    • The folks in denial over the extent to which the Russian cyber war against the US has succeeded need to understand that this is a serious threat to the United States. Take Trump completely out of the picture, if you need to.

    • The core issue is that agents of an unfriendly rival power test drove an asymmetrical attack against the social and governmental infrastructure of the United States, and succeed to such extent that they have launched a full scale cyber war.

    • And it is well past time that we did something about it. Trump's refusal to even acknowledge that this is going in is highly problematic to say the very least!

Precisely what fake news or lies did Russian Intelligence or the Russian state post on social media? And if they did, hasn't that sort of propaganda been produced in the media for at least 100 years, without resulting in any great outcry. Why the fuss now?
And is it suggested Trump paid the Russians to post fake news ? And could his supporters in the U.S.not have posted the same fake news ? So why did Trump bother to engage Russians to do the posting, when his own American friends could have done it for him ?

Trump did have his friends do the same....The Enquirer, but the Russians are MUCH better at it.

So we have this issue, but what exactly do you want us to do about it?

Now that this report is out, it will only be a matter of time before we see a lot of examples of Russians sourced FB pages, memes and Instagram and Twitter posts. We'll be able to compare those with the blizzard of Russian created fake right wing news sites that miraculously appeared and just as quickly disappeared during the latter half of the 2016 election. Of course, they stayed around to be liked and shared by many Trump supporters and (much more importantly) shared on social media network feeds with millions of people who otherwise would never have been influence by the Russian effort.

Where did you get the idea that Trump paid the Russians????

    Nobody said that.

The Russians own Trump. He's not too smart, but I doubt that Putin could actually trick Trump into paying for the Russians attack. At least not given Trump's well know aversion to spending his own money.

Oh, and a lot of Trump supporters joined in the fake news avalanche. Indeed, much of the most rabidly pro Trump blogosphere is devoted to peddling memes, many of which are totally false.

But the Trumpster audience doesn't mind being lied to. They come back to the same source for more every time.

:roflol: Democrats literally believe that the world wide Web is only for Americans and foreigners that agree with them.

Every globalist Democrat poster here from another country should be banned from PF according to American Democrats.

I bet there are paid Russians here. maybe the whole site should be shut down?

We need to do several things.

We need tough international regulation of social media platforms, and a mechanism to report to international intelligence and law enforcement agencies when patterns of covert international political influence appear.

And this must be accompanies by laws and penalites that punish social media companies for doing what Facebook has been doing, ignoring the nefarious behavior of their clients and just taking the money. They did not invent the poison, but they were used as useful idiots in spreading it. And, they've as much as acknowledged their culpability by trying to hide their behavior and attack their critics. (sounds like someone else I can think of).

We need the fool in the White House to realize that this isn't about him. It's about the integrity of our political processes and our need to use government to curb the influence and growing power of internet companies.

But, as he has consistently tried to evade responsibility or leadership, and instead behaves like someone who has something to hide...…..

Not surprised by this, and I'm sure it's done by far more then just the Russians.

You deny you are for censorship while you advocate for censorship.

I remember when democrats used to say, I may not agree with what you say but I will fight for your right to say it.

Now they say, your speech has been deemed hateful by the central Nexus. Report to authorities for disciplinary action. Resistance is futile.

:roflol:Maybe if we go up to the world wide Web and pull the cord that connects Russia out of it everything will be good?

Obama knew what was going on and did nothing. In the mean time, crooked Hillary paid for a phony dossier in order to subvert a democratic election. She cheated and still lost.

Your first point would hinder our capabilities to influence other countries elections. I dont think that would be in our best interests. But your second point is spot on. The third, Trumps feelings one way or the other do not matter what matters is Congress and their response.

The idiot did NOTHING to counter any of this, even when he was repeatedly and publicly urged to do so.

The idiot didn't have a word to say about the Russian effort, even denying it publicly and insulting and attacking his own intelligence and law enforcement official in the bargain. Which serves the Russian objective very very will. Putin openly trolls Trump, and has now publicly refused to meet with him altogether.

Trump accused China of hacking Clinton's e-mails, too. But he made that up.

If you don't like open free Internet maybe you can make a Democrat internet. On Democrat Internet, Democrats get to decide who can use it and regulate what they say.

Notice how no democrats stand up for the open free Internet?

Well, you globalists wanted globalization, now you have it.

Regarding people who miraculously appeared and disappeared, do you remember Zorn Captain? He was good for 4 or 5 anti Trump posts a day and after the election he was gone. Was he a Russian?

Speaking of Russians, why is it wrong for them to insert their thoughts into our elections while Australians on this board are free to insert theirs? What's the difference other than the number of people who might see it?

Finally, and I've said this a lot of times, if Clinton voters were swayed by Facebook ads then what does that say about liberals? So much for that highly educated stuff, eh?
