Not so simple considering that legal marriage in involved in endless legal issues in our society. Healthcare, taxes, inheritance, real estate ownership, etc, etc.
Post #44 is your response to the OP. Were you addressing me in that post, or the people who wrote the manifesto? I ask because it appeared you were addressing me.
It would just all need to readjust through Federal legislation, court actions and so forth it might hurt some and demand changes in policy but would be easier than a Constitutional Amendment to ban SSM. Plus since it would be contractual it would ban any marriage where the parties cannot legally enter into a contract.
What we have is fine. If religions aren't comfortable with the definition of legal marriage they don't have to do that service.
If you start in Jamaica, head east to Africa, east to Eastern Europe, and then go beyond... you end up in the Middle East. Where, in some places, these groups are tossing people off of buildings because they think they might be gay. Chilling is a good word.
I have a few friends that served over in Iraq and Afghanistan. I remember one friend telling me a story about a 12 year old that was seen as a "sissy" not sure he was even gay. Men and older boys pulled his arms off of his body and beat him to death with them. Another told me he saw a similar situation were a young boy was repeatedly ran over by a truck until he was killed. The abusers laughing as they did this. This is what religious encroachment does. Of course some religious people want this. I don't think most in the US do.
Maybe so but the deafening silence from the vast majority of Christians about the sins of scripture allows the homophibic lunatics to quote the bible in their defence. If you haven't read Bishop John Shelby Spong's 'The Sins of Scripture: Exposing the Bible's Texts of Hate to Reveal the God of Love" or Douglas Lockhart's "The Dark Side of God: A Quest for the Lost Heart of Christianity" may I respectfully suggest you put these on the reading list for any bible study groups you attend or know of. To use an oft misused passage from 2nd Thessalonians Ch 2: V 11., which I suggest is perfectly appropriate in this context :- "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie"
Give them powers similar to sharia law and they'll run amok. Remember Salem and the Spanish Inquisition? The last of these a monstrous sin yet to be confessed by the church of Rome.
