As abortion access becomes increasingly harder in many states in the US women, especially poor women, will be tempted with the quick and easy access of medications off of the internet.

    http://contraception.about.com/b/2009/12/03/women-are-buying-home-abortion-pills-online.htm

It is already happening in the US

Even in England this is a concern

But it wasn't her only choice. It was simply the only choice she was willing to consider. I get so tired of people acting like their hands are tied when they're not.

So, you know more about her life than she does? She may have been homeless, she may have had an underlying medical condition, she may have been on drugs that would cause grave risk to the foetus

Point is we have a new situation here - cheap access of abortifacients off of the internet versus increasingly expensive and complicated "legal" abortions - if she does not want to be forced to watch an ultrasound then this is the option she might well choose instead of the safer option of oversight by medical personnel

Or she may have just not wanted to have a child at 19 with some guy she doesn't know. You are assuming just as much as I am.

And you are dodging the main question of the thread by blaming the woman

    How do you stop this?

Who else is there to blame, Bower? She's the one that made the decision. If women are equal, they must be held accountable for their actions just like everybody else. They don't get a free pass just for having a vagina.

The goal shouldn't be stopping illegal abortion but rather stopping abortion altogether. Which you do through educating people and changing their perspective to where they no longer want abortions.

Why do pro-lifers immediately jump to playing the blame game when it comes to this issue? You can stand around all day blaming women for choosing to have sex and choosing to get knocked up and choosing not to use contraception and so on or you can address the causes behind why women are choosing abortion and why women are so desperate to seek unsafe drugs online and actually make a change and a difference in the need for abortion by fixing the cause of the problem.

No, addressing the reasons for abortion would most definitely minimize the need for abortion. Poverty is one of the leading causes for women choosing abortion, perhaps you'll want to start with the one? Or perhaps you'd rather continue placing blame on people and completely ignoring the real underlying issues altogether?

But the two are one and the same. The fact that they are making poor and irresponsible sexual decisions is the cause of the problem. We all mess up. We all make mistakes. I'm not faulting them for that. But when you don't even make the effort to make the right decisions, you're likely to find yourself in situations with consequences you don't like. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Pro-abortionists want the luxury of making poor choices and then having an escape plan when the inevitable consequences catch up with them. You can't fix the problem when you are working against yourself. Because your intentions are divided. If you are in love with your vice, you will never be free of it.

Poverty doesn't get people pregnant. Sex does. If you want to start some kind of sex ed plan for the poor, be my guest, but it's only going to work so well until you foster an attitude in that environment that does not favor irresponsibility. People have to want to do something in order to do it. Otherwise, you're just teaching a dog to play the piano. It's an exercise in futility.

When you sit there and point the finger at everything else and refuse to hold people accountable for their actions, it might make them feel better, but they're not going to change. Do you want to make them feel good, or do you want to help them?

And pro-choicers are in favor of increased sex education and increased access to contraceptives, two things that strongly help deter unplanned pregnancy. Remember that the vast majority of the pro-life movement are in favor of abstinence only education and absolutely no taxes going towards free or cheaper contraceptives.

That's not what I said. I said poverty is one of the leading causes for women to choose abortion. If more lower/middle class pregnant women had access to aid in raising a child then you would probably see a huge decrease in the number of women choosing abortion, which is what you want right?

I know it bothers many lifers when their taxes go to purchase people's contraceptives but hopefully they wouldn't mind aiding a poor pregnant woman who did not want an abortion but felt her financial circumstances called for it? You know, taxes that would go to her child-to-be's welfare and care?

I don't know, do you want to continue playing the blame game and shaming women or do you want to help them?

There's a difference between education and promotion. I'll be the first to admit that my side needs to expand on their education stance to include other things besides solely abstinance. However, the message must still be responsibility. Responsibility is key.

Taxes are an entirely different issue. The "free or cheaper contraceptives" argument is a flimsy one. Who in the hell can't afford a pack of condoms? They cost next to nothing already. And they are highly accessible They are sold at nearly every gas station, corner store, grocery store, and Walmart in the country. If you can't afford condoms, you probably don't need to be having sex in the first place because you've likely got bigger problems. Or if you think you can't afford condoms but you have a cell phone, you need to adjust your priorities.

You're missing the point. They are only choosing abortion because they are already pregnant. Why are they getting pregnant if they are in poverty? This is where that change in behavior needs to come in. The wiser choices and personal responsibility. When you overlook how they are getting pregnant, you are doing exactly what I said here:

If you want to stop someone from continuously finding themselves in bad situations, you have to help them stop making the decisions that put them there. You have to stop the problem at the source. You're not doing that here.

Nope, I'm not even going to let you play that card. If you are equal then you can handle being held accountable for your choices just like everybody else. You're not going to pull this "shaming women" card. That's sexist nonsense. You can't appeal to pity and claim vulnerability if you are the same as everyone else. You all are big girls. You need to act like adults.

And many view abortion as a responsible choice. You may not but I do and so do many other women.

Crying shoulda, coulda woulda to women who are already pregnant isn't helping them with their current predicament.

Continuously? Most women will have only had one abortion in their lives.

And I do want to stop the problem at the source, which is with lack of sexual education, lack of knowledge or understanding of contraceptives, lack of access to them and more aid for pregnant women who are already pregnant do not want to abort.

We do and we make all our own big girl choices, choices that grumpy, bossy little boys can just butt out of, about our own uteruses too! =)

It's responsible in the same sense that rubbing out a witness after committing a crime is responsible. It's killing an innocent person to tie up loose ends so that you don't have to deal with the consequences of your actions. And it's beyond sick. Especially to do that to your own child.

You are smarter than this. I'm talking about cutting the problem off at its source before it even gets to this point. If you focus more on prevention, you'll have a lot less to clean up. Where is your interest in prevention?

    Continuously as a demographic.

Yeah, sorry sweetheart, but adults don't weasel out of responsibilities. They step up and handle them. Nobody cares about your uteruses. We care about the human beings inside of them whose lives you deem dispensable. Approximately half of which are girls, by the way.

Then why did you not start this conversation with that? All pro-choicers (well vast majority) are for contraception and ways to prevent pregnancy in the first place - and remember this article is from England the girl is probably fictional. There is no doubt there has been a rise in emergency contraception over the last few years
And they have a high failure rate - look at the stats for abortion and you will find a majority DID use contraception and it failed

No, this is where human nature comes in, and ignorance and lack of access and.............

    I
Tell us - how do we do that?
For every female that ends up with an unwanted pregnancy there is a male who did not take proper precautions - why is there little blame for them?

And that is your opinion, however that is all that it is.

Funny you should ask, it's right here actually. http://www.politicalforum.com/abort...ur-baby-acceptable-would-more-women-do-6.html

You're right, adults make choices, sometimes responsible, sometimes irresponsible and they learn from their experiences and move on. The good thing is though most of us get to make our own choices freely without the interference of others and learn from what we did right and wrong and make different better choices in the future.

    Oh trust me, we KNOW.

    Another opinion.

Strange, you feel the need to protect those female fetuses yet when they are born you wish to strip them of their rights to bodily autonomy if they are ever to become pregnant. Yes, this is a two way street and if you want to point out what you think is ironic I will point out what I find to be very ironic.

Those pills should be issued at all welfare offices. All pregnancies while on public assistance
    requires termination.

No, but you want the other choice to be her only choice. You want her hands tied, just tied the way you want them.

How to stop the rise of illegal abortion

It's a choice, let's face it, between castrating men, abolishing sex, jailing all women or legalising abortion. America, America, what may we think of thee!

Well, no - you could always just get all men to donate sperm THEN sterilise them. When they have earned enough money to support a child they can apply to withdraw their sperm and petition for a willing woman to be impregnated

    THAT would stop abortion

So you'd impose NO legal restrictions on abortion?

Hmmmmm - this will be interesting

The genie that they have let out of THIS bag is very large indeed and could lead to women being arrested and tested simultaneously for ingestion of drugs, legal or otherwise and pregnancy. Imagine 19 out on the town with your boyfriend you have a drink at a bar and a cop comes up arrests you and next thing you are being asked for a urine sample. You are "pregative" in the vernacular and then you are charged with child endangerment - not because you had any illegal drugs but because you drank while pregnant

Alcohol is a known teratogenic agent
