A few observations and headlines at 2pm Eastern Time: - Florence is still a Cat 2 hurricane and is in the Gulf Stream right now. Analysts are wondering if it will give the storm a boost right before it makes landfall tonight - The hurricane is expected to make landfall right at Wilmington, NC (pop. 117,525) https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/t...according-to-the-latest-prediction/ar-BBNaLfb - 4000 people in NC are already out of power - Storm surge could be as high as 13 feet in some areas
Yep. You'll soon be seeing it in other states. Remember, your insurance commissioner is partly to blame for that; they're the gatekeepers over what gets filed by your insurer.

Just been watching the explore.org lighthouse camera. It's symbolic, in a way, especially with an election so close.
Here's what that flag looked like a little earlier today: https://cnet3.cbsistatic.com/img/v5...3-48c6-a14a-b100db2dff33/fryingpanlivecam.jpg At this rate I'll be surprised if it's still there in the morning...
Florence is down to 100 mph max sustained winds. While still a hurricane, it will not be near as bad as we were told for the past couple days. The biggest threat will probably be flooding.
Anyone in here under that monster? I know it probably doesn't seem like it to you but it could have been a lot worse
Mrs Don has got family on Ocracoke. We got evacuated for Isobel - this looks far worse. Our fingers are crossed.
Oh my all kinds of prayers Why didn't they evacuate? Premature evacuation is okay.. but I know when you are a local you kind of are ready for anything
Thanks for your concern. They never do evacuate, they think they have adequate resources to ride out the storm and would rather be immediately on hand to begin any rebuilding. They've been there for more than 40 years so presumably they've been through a few storms (including Isobel, the one we were evacuated for)
I wish they had a satellite phone right now and call into the news. who knows the TV station might even give them a few dollars for the exclusive rights to interview Power to them
Wind wise yes. But the flooding will most likely be the worst part of this storm. The ocean that has been dragged behind the cat 4 storm will follow the backside of the storm. I've been through several hurricanes and have found the backside to be worse then the frontside. This huge lingering storm will also bring tons of rain from the coast and further inland which will eventually runoff back towards the ocean over flowing the rivers. It could take a week or two before the flooding subsides.
Wind speeds are hard to predict but much of the reporting has also focused on the ocean surge and rainfall. Homes might be able to withstand winds, but they aren't built for flooding. The damage to wooden homes by flooding is a serious health issue as well because it's not just "water" that is in the flood. It can be composed of toxic chemicals, sewage dead animals and who knows what else.
Lots of rescues happening in the New Bern area. People are reporting on roof tops begging for help. While I can imagine the fear and devastation these people are experiencing, it angers me that they didn't listen to days worth of evacuation orders and now first responders and others are putting themselves in danger to rescue them. It's to be expected I guess, some will never learn.
I compare it to Harvey which didn't have high winds either but hung around and dumped a ton of water on heavily populated areas that were built in low areas. I expect the same to happen with Florence but over a much wider area.
