I am of the opinion that Birtherism has one and only one function-

To provide for racist whites a rationalization that the President was not "legitimately" elected.

So that they can then continue to convince themselves that America is a "white rule only" country and will forever remain so. It is ANATHEMA for them to have to admit, even setting aside politics and partisanship, that an African-American could become President of "their" country except by tricks, fraud, illegalities, etc.

In fact, it was none other than Ann Coulter, who when Birtherism first started, compared it to "the last remaining members of the Klan", in an interview on Fox with Geraldo Rivera.

well, of course it is to delegitimze the president and to stir up hatred toward him as a usurper. It is easier to do this to the racist "mind" since that is such a low-powered and simple system to manipulate.

The more sinister goal is to actually encourage people to take up arms against the government. Those imbeciles playing militia out in the woods are not the benign force that we have been told they are. Not even they realize the malignancy that brought them into being.

Birfers are just agents of the Organization, recruiting troops for the RaHoWa.

i'm a birther. i work alone though. i've never tried to recruit anyone. seems silly to think about. it's not like the freemasons where we would have secret handshakes and all. lol.

this theory is about three years too late. not many birthers are racist, you would have to give me some examples. i'm sure there are a few, but that doesn't have anything to do with anything i've seen during my time with the subject. if obama was a white libertarian, it wouldn't change my thinking at all.

it's hard to generalise these days... you'll catch up..

    Cognitive dissonance.

    1. A man of mixed race has been elected president.
    2. He was not born in the United States.
    3. Someone not born in the United States cannot legitimately be president.
    4. Therefore a man of mixed raced has not been elected president.

Birtherism started with an e-mail circulated by clinton supporters in 2008

No. It didn't. It started on the right-wing forum FreeRepublic on March 1, 2008 with this post.

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1978110/posts?page=391#391

It was then picked up, elaborated on and spread by right wing bloggers, beginning here:

    http://alanpetersroundup.blogspot.com/2008/03/freedoms-enemies-obama-story.html

Hillary's PUMAs were late to the game, and only passing on a meme invented by right-wing, conservative Republicans.

And here I thought it started when michelle obama called her husband a Kenyan back in 2007.
Would you like to see the video?

Nope! I don't think so! Yes, her campaign has used it. But she is not stupid and would not come up with such an asinine tale!

And yet... right-wing conservatives are still the ones who invented it and they are still the ones who spread it. And they are still the ones spreading it today. This is a demonstrated, incontrovertible fact. Your theorizing and speculating crashes on the rocks of the links I provided above.

The claim that it was Hillary supporters who started the birther movement has been proven to be a lie. Unless you can show us a single comment by a single Hillary supporter that predates the March 1st, 2008 launch of Birthism on Free Republic, you are caught in that lie.

daily telegraph and others don't think it's a 'lie'...I have no doubt that the right took the truther ball and ran with it,but to claim it didn't originate with hillary supporters is ignoring history

The Person in the free republic evidently heard it from somewhere.......

"well known fact" is a birtherism for "this is what I believe therefore it is up to Obama to prove otherwise"

Yet you haven't provided a single piece of evidence to support your claim.

Wong did the research, he did provide the evidence, you haven't and deny it all.

    It is clasic Birtherism.

I think it is slightly more complicated than that.

Certainly for some Birthers it is a way of refusing to accept that Americans would choose a black President without saying "I don't like him because he is black".

Certainly during the 2008 election there were lots of terms used by people as substitute for just out and out calling him black.

But I do not think that all Birthers are racists- I think a considerable subset are just ardently anti-Obama and Birtherism is just a convenient lie for them to use to oppose him. And then there is a really high co-relation between Birthers and conspiracy theorists in general- some Birthers must have a conspiracy to believe in.

I would call it a perfect storm but it is more of a whispy cloud on the horizon intruding into an otherwise beautiful sunny day.

Birtherism is about as relevant as the flat earth society. If you stop making threads about it, no one will know it exists anymore.

Dude Phillip berg was a Hillary campaign supporter.

He's the guy behind orly tates.

The supreme court of his state barred him from practicing law.

Theyre the ones filling lawsuits and and getting media attention, they are the birthers.

You show me some annomous post on a freakn message board.…… its weak. Heck, Hillary herself could a posted that.

The people who filed all the lawsuits and got all the media attention, used to be hillary henchmen, err...… I mean Hillary henchpersons...… I don't wanna be accused of belittleing female henchpersons....

Hilary did not start the birther movement. if you can find any statement of hers prior to march 1st 2008's post on free republic I'll gladly concede to you. but you won't be able to do that because none exist.
