I was talking to my uncle about my current job and about how I've been volunteering for as many extra shifts as they can give me and working later hours than necessary and going out of my way to meet customers' needs. And he said, "The unions would hate you. People like you make the rest of them look bad." And he would know. He used to be in one. And he feels the same way I do about them. That originally they served their purpose but that today they have become greedy and lazy and more concerned with getting more for doing less than for really contributing their best quality work to the company they are employed by. Working is fun. Why don't more people have a better work ethic? I love feeling productive. And the fact that I get paid for it too just makes it that much better.
Ayuh,..... I agree,.... I've pretty much always loved my work,.... The few times I didn't, I moved on,.... Like when I was forced to join the Teamsters for 18 months on a Bronx job,...
I've worked with union people many times. They would NEVER survive outside of it. They count their minutes working, are barely flexible and don't have any pride in the big picture of the company.
The history of unions is worse than their present. The workers are good people, the union bosses are corrupt and always have been. They used to also be more violent and were totally racist and often beat the crap out of blacks trying to get jobs.
are you getting paid for the extra work, or just doing it for free? that makes all the difference - now, if you were doing it for free then no wonder the unions would dislike you
I think we are generalizing too much. There are small unions and big ones, there are good ones and bad ones. There are good shop stewards and crappy ones.
