"Would African Americans be better off if they lived in Africa today?"

That would be impossible to answer. However, if the question is "Would African Americans be better off if they immigrated to Africa today" then the answer is a resounding
    NO!

Having lived in Africa and travelled the vast majority of the continent myself, I can say they would be screwed the minute they arrive. You see, Africans are racists in their own way. They are highly tribal, ethnic-oriented, and judge other Africans by their tribe. As black Americans belong to no African tribe they are considered stateless and of no consequence. "Nobody". The indigenous population would want nothing to do with them.

Absolutely. I have seen a few episodes of "COPS" where a call goes out to find an "African Amerian" or "Forensic Files" where the remains of a deceased person is labelled an "African American". What a bunch of crap! "Can't be my neighbour officer, he's from Nigeria".

    They prefer the label themselves.

If so, why do they hyphenate their Americanism?

The people in Africa are, in general, much worse off than those of us in the US. Leaving those people there then would not have made any difference in the wellbeing of those there today. It's hard to imagine just how backwards Africa would be today if not for European colonization. Both colonization and slavery justify violent resistance, but colonization is a net benefit to Africans today, and slavery is a net benefit to the American descendants of slaves today.

While blacks in America are rightfully indignant over the institution of slavery, not a one of them is unhappy that they live here as Americans instead of Africa as an African.

African Americans are quite different to Africans... they have a huge chip on their shoulder. I'm sorry to say this but Africans are much nicer and friendlier than African Americans....
