“A new bill rolling back child labor laws in Iowa to allow 14-year-olds to work hazardous jobs in the mining, meatpacking and logging sectors as long as they are done under an approved training program has been harshly criticized by Democrat state senators and labor rights experts.” "On top of that, Senate File 167 would also free businesses from civil liability if a teen gets sick, is injured or killed on the job due to the company's negligence or the teen's negligence.” Many Americans think the US is going in the wrong direction. I think this Newsweek article is a good example of a wrong direction. How can this be right??
"The golf links lie so near the mill That almost every day The laboring children can look out And see the men at play." Poem by Sarah Cleghorn. Regards, stay safe 'n well.
I'm okay with the training program, but not with absolving businesses of their responsibility to keep workers safe and be responsible when they don't.
Iowa already allows 14-year-olds to work in the fields, doesn't surprise me Republicans are doing this, they probably won't even get min wage then to add this to it, just sick ""On top of that, Senate File 167 would also free businesses from civil liability if a teen gets sick, is injured or killed on the job due to the company's negligence or the teen's negligence.”" some Republicans want to get rid of Social Security too, so the elderly have to work until they drop dead this is the kinda stuff that happens when Republican have full control
Good lord you listen to too much ABC/NPR and MSNBC. But, they've been successful spewing lies as is evident by your posts
Here is a less bias article. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/s...l-to-change-iowa-child-labor-law/69870761007/ So, if the kids are enrolled in a training program, with precautions in place, they are allowed to work jobs inherently more dangerous only with the approval of parents. I'm on the fence. I did roofing, agricultural, and heavy machinery when I was 14. I didn't know a single person that was hurt.
I worked under the table on weekends at a busy restaurant when I was 14. Can't say that I was the most productive creature at that age so I'm not sure they were getting their money's worth. At the same time, I also wasn't some clueless exploited child.
so they can work those dangerous jobs, but not at a grocery store or book store, etc....? does that make sense
Surprise-surprise..not. Schultz worked as an insurance adjuster at Farmers Mutual Insurance Association in Schleswig. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Schultz
Here's the bill and what would be changed for those that wish to read it themselves. As usual its a bit more complicated than a simple news article will make it out to be. LINK: Iowa Legislature - BillBook I do find it interesting that the same people that are objecting to this... yet have no problem with transgender hormone therapy and surgery for minors. Even minors younger than 14. Sounds hypocritical to me. Personally, I'm against both. And this Jason Schultz guy should have his head examined.
Nothing wrong with kids working in the fields. In fact, it's quite common. Having kids work is actually a good thing. Teaches them responsibility and to not be afraid to do the type of work that many uppity and spoiled leftists don't like to do themselves. And before you try and say something snarky or what have you, refer to post 12. I'm against making kids work in dangerous situations like mines and slaughter factories. Working in the fields however is no more dangerous than having a pool in your yard. (368 farm fatalities in 2020 ((including adults)): 350 pool fatalities for children)
what's odd though is they allow them to work in the field, but not as cashiers and other easier jobs I worked in the field at 14, low pay and hard work
You are right. That is essentially the way those that are against this bill, yet have no problem with transgender minors getting hormone therapy or surgery are acting like.
If a store sells alcohol/tobacco products then yes, its illegal due to it being illegal for children to have/handle alcohol or tobacco products. Same applies for guns also. Most stores handle at least 1 of those things. Not sure what you mean by "other easier jobs" though. Pretty broad so can't speak to it.
it was illegal when I was younger too, and they only sold alcohol in gov run locations back then many jobs are easier than working in the field, I gave examples
Oh so you're talking about that. Your phrasing implied something else. I thought it might so whipped this up in response also, just in case... Not sure where you get that idea from. Or did you miss the part where I said "Personally, I'm against both. And this Jason Schultz guy should have his head examined. Because no where in my post was such a thing implied.
you said if teens can get medical procedures or hormone blockers, they can work so the same woudl be true with babies right?
Here's your original post, after an edit and my response to you... So...what other examples did you give again?
Like a pants on fire kind of post... Of course, the bill doesn't actually absolve companies, it just requires a higher standard of proof, being "willful negligence".. which of course the Newsweek points out is a "harder standard to prove in court"... And of course, providing an avenue other than illegal drug sales to minors is what democrats really are aghast at.... Having an opportunity to get out from under their carefully curated structural poverty, that's the bridge too far... The dishonesty of the FA post.... typical for sure.
So the pro grooming, pro child marriage party is also for pushing for people to work even longer while they gut their retirement programs. Republicans have no low they will not go.
