LATEST: Iran says it has successfully test fired a long-range missile during its naval exercise in the Gulf, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"We have test fired a long-range shore-to-sea missile called Qader (capable), which managed to successfully destroy predetermined targets in the Gulf," the agency quoted deputy navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi as saying.

The move follows Iran's threat to halt oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

"Today we will test-fire Qader and Nour long range missiles during the drill," Mousavi told state TV earlier today.

Iran has been holding the 10-day naval exercise at a time of increased tension with Western powers over its nuclear programme, and Mousavi said on Sunday it had successfully test-fired a medium range surface-to-air missile.

Tehran threatened last week to stop the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz if it became the target of an oil embargo over its nuclear ambitions. The European Union has said it is considering a ban - already in place in the United States - on imports of Iranian crude.

The US Fifth Fleet said it will not allow any disruption of traffic in the vital oil shipping route.

The United States and Israel say they have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve a dispute over the nuclear programme, which Tehran says is peaceful but the West believes is a cover for trying to build atomic bombs.

Iran has long-range missile systems, which could reach Israel and US bases in the Middle East.

I don't know why this "news". Which nation does not test its missles? Sounds like a normal and common activity to me which is nothing to be concerned about.

Why should a terrorist country like Iran be allowed to develop missiles?

True, but it's only ok when the US does it. If anyone else does it then it's almost an act of war!

That sounds about right. Only America may test missiles, and everyone else is a "terrorist".

It's also ok when the US conducts war games in the South China Sea, and elsewhere, but if anyone does anything in their own backyard...........

" A WELCOME DIVERSION FOR DAESH & THEIR SUPPORTERS”

I can think of few other countries who so badly need a strong military defense / deterrence capability than Iran given the numerous & very specific threats it faces from the most aggressive & ruthless entities in the world[1] as it is possibly the most dedicated regional opponent to Qatar, Israel, US & Saudi etc supported Daesh

While far more compelling Regional events eclipse a missile test that is an ignored practice that occurs in far more malevolent States every day, selectively outraged, Right Wing “Israel Firsters” & other Daesh allies have chosen to focus on this Iranian non event.

If any Iranian actions are to be cited as newsworthy, its praiseworthy attempts in ridding the World of Daesh are far more deserving of our attention & support rather than diversionary finger-pointing at routine weapons testing.

I’m sure that Daesh / ISIL leaders welcome a break from the Headlines as their supporters condemn one of the few nations willing to fight the Big Terrorists.
