Yeah I like netflix, though relying exclusively on it sometimes I've basically exhausted the kind of stuff I prefer to watch (documentaries). Cinema is really expensive in comparison, but it's not really the same thing. Cinema is for watching something on a really big screen with high quality sound, and also to watch something really new. I don't know that it's worth the asking price, but it makes for a better experience depending upon the movie.

Cinema is an art form. You can view it at home or at a theater.

As far as Cinema goes as an art form I think it's pretty dead right now.

The artists are lazy or incompetent, the stories are bland or generic. At least from the big studios

As a result the more artistic work is not recognized mostly because it's not costing $700 million dollars to produce. But it's where the art form is alive.

The theater is filled with products and merchandise not cinemagraphic art. The sort of thing appeals to children so I can understand why people would say Cinema is for children

But I think this has to do with the more simplistic understanding there are more interested in seeing the hulk smash or Captain America or whatever.

Wow that's confusing. Documentaries rely on cinematography so if you're watching documentaries even on your cell phone you're watching Cinema.

This must be a European thing because in the US we call these places in movie theaters or just theaters.

But I get what you mean going to the theater is quite an expense. And aside from a very select few you don't really get to see a lot of documentaries.

Amazon has great nature documentaries if you have prime.

Cinema is synonymous with movie theater as far as I know, in Oregon and California, though generally it's a word not used much. If somebody said, "I'm going to the cinema," you'd understand they mean movie theater, not watching something on their phone. If somebody just said theater it's more ambiguous, as it could mean a live play like in Ashland, Oregon.

I cannot recall what the last movie I saw in the theater was. People are just too annoying with cellphones these days. I watch a lot online, though not through netflix, when I do watch but that is only a few days a month. I might binge clean out the DVR from time to time but at any given time maybe 2-4 shows are recording new episodes.

Fair enough. Yeah I would understand if someone said they were going to the cinema.

    I didn't see a poll so I didn't vote (?).

I haven't been in a theater in almost ten years and have no plans ever to go again. That said, I like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video well enough, BUT -- 'content' comes, and 'content' goes. If you want something that is permanently YOURS TO KEEP, you'd better get it on hold-in-your-hands DVD or Blu-ray disks. They can't take those away from you!

BTW, it bears repeating that when you "buy" a feature on Amazon, you don't (DON'T) actually "own" it. All you "own" is the right to watch the feature over and over and over -- but only until or unless it gets pulled off of Amazon Prime. Then, if it does get pulled for whatever reason, you find that you "own" nothing.

Been ages since I have been out to see a movie. I tend to buy a digital copy upon release or wait until it hits a streaming service.

I am old fashioned guy who likes DVDs. I have hundreds of them. This Christmas when I want to see a favorite holiday film, I get it out and watch it whenever I want. I can stop and start it, and in backward if I am so inclined. I buy it once and put it on a shelf.

The widescreen theater experience can be quite enjoyable, but Hollywood produces mostly woke trash these days. It makes the NRA boosting old Hollywood used to stick into movies from the 1930s look apolitical.

Hello, @politicalcenter . Try purging the "cache" on your TV's streaming apps. Also, in some TV's, like my 2-year old Samsung QLED model, you can go into the TV's internal settings and purge its "cache", too. Apps like those for Netflix and Amazon Prime Video develop very large caches! :eyepopping:

Few people know about this 'purging-the-cache' thing, and it can help a LOT, especially on older, marginally-performing TV's. Try it, and if it works, then be sure and do the 'purge' about every week or so. Good luck!

I remember. It was a movie called Red Tails. I went with a group of friends. I had to stuff napkin paper in my ears to tame the loudness of the sound. It was a good movie but I would have enjoyed it more watching it in my home theater. A 65" screen is more than adequte from 10 feet away and the sound is better and adjustable. I haven't been in a movie theater since then and don't expect to patronize one in the future. It is obsolete technology.
