I think he's being more than a little presumptuous. I'd be mighty offended if I were an American. The reason I think that is because the US has to deal with the realpolitik of the situation and is choosing to stay out of the argument which, for what it's worth, I think is wise. The British government, and make no bones about this, they are behind this 100%, is trying to inveigle the US government into this squabble. If I were Kerry I'd be furious.
The US may have been "founded on the principles of liberty" but that was then and this is now. The government and a large part of its people no longer believe in such lofty notions.
