This is a long but very interesting article.. I didn't know there were 5 gyres.. Naysayers claim there is no solution.

Is There Really A Solution For Ocean Pollution

Over the past few years, the world has been awakened to the fact that there are gigantic swirling masses of trash floating in our oceans, 90 percent of which is plastic (source). Environmental proponents, scientists, policy makers, journalists, and “solution designers” have been chewing on the issue of waste – plastics in particular- for decades. But, as they discover and attempt to address the “gyres,” it seems they’ve all but bitten off more than they can chew.

Meanwhile, the world is feeding these ever-growing floating garbage heaps. According to Plastics News, the per capita consumption of plastics has risen dramatically in every corner of the globe.

From 2001 to 2010, in North America alone, plastic consumption per person on average rose 46 percent to a staggering 326 pounds annually. If we’re only talking about the approximate 314 million Americans tossing out the trash, that adds up to more than 50 million tons of plastic waste every year. There’s obviously room for debate around that number, but the fact remains that humans are trashing the earth like a rockstar at the Ritz.

So, where does it all go? According to the EPA, “Only 8 percent of the total plastic waste generated in 2011 was recovered for recycling.” Some plastics do manage to get repurposed, but about half of the waste is buried in landfills. The remainder? Researchers at 5gyers.org suggest that what is unaccounted for is sadly “lost in the environment, where it ultimately washes out to sea.”

The solution to pollution is dilution

its an old saying, i guess. people used to think that pollution wasnt a problem if you just diluted it enough

OH... I was thinking of POPs in the environment.

Is There Really A Solution For Ocean Pollution ?

    Yes....there is.

Unfortunately it is TIME, and lots of it.

Many think these Gyres are piles of bottles floating in heaps out in the oceans, in reality these are mostly areas of plastic particles and shreds breaking down into toxic fish food.

its more like a sick joke than it is a solution to anything.

its kind of like what I saw on a biol. professors office door

The sooner all the animals are extinct
The sooner we can find out where all their money is hidden.

I've seen some articles documenting indications that the concentration of plastic in the gyres is becoming high enough to reward the advent of bacteria and other organisms capable of metabolizing it. This development should only accelerate as more plastic reaches the oceans. Of course, it would help if humans went extinct.

It's obvious most all of the critical problems in the USA and world today are rooted in the behavior of PEOPLE. Can people change their behavior; a fraction of them yes, most of them no. How many generations will it take to change people's behavior or ideas...IMO perhaps 50-100. If people are threatened by something they can see within their immediate personal zone they might become more interested in change. If it's something they can't see, does not appear to effect them, like global climate change or polluting the oceans, these people may never have an interest in those topics. People demand cheaper drinks/foods in plastic containers but governments and industry don't care about long-term effects...give the consumer what they want! I always wonder why People litter? I mean how much intelligence is necessary to understand littering is not a good thing? Yet People litter all the time...
