We don't know what Iran plans. My guess is that it will be confined to the region and that it will not be an immediate response. "Proportional?" Define proportional. Sinking a United States aircraft carrier (we have thirteen operational) would be akin to flying aircraft into the Twin Towers. One can be sure Iran is thinking about Act II.

The average ocean liner these days is made up of hundreds of watertight compartments. Please stop posting as though you behave a clue as to what you're talking about...

 

Titanic had 16 watertight compartments. Thats a simple fact.

The average ocean Liner today sinks from less damage. Costa Concordia for example

Titanic was not a cruise liner, she was a transatlantic liner. Compared to modern ships she had a very good standard. Today passenger ships have a 2 section standard, which means they stay afloat when two compartments get flooded. Titanic had a 4 compartment standard.

Problem is...all that is irrelevant when the guy on the bridge is an idiot and slams the entire front quarter of the ship sideways at the iceberg. How is it called in english? Glancing blow?

Im quite sure that an aircraft carrier whose entire front quarter gets damaged under water would sink as well. Its simply physics.

I think standard procedure is to better do a frontal impact and not let the vessel smash its entire side at the object?
