Stereotyping has to be based on some degree of truth or the stereotype doesn't work. Profiling is based on tons of things including how a person acts, the way he carries himself, the area he's in, etc. When I used to live in NJ the cops would stop me if I went into the wrong parts of NYC or Jersey City because white people were out of place in those areas and were probably up to no good - or maybe needed to be rescued. Jesse Jackson stereotyped when he was glad the footsteps he heard behind him were from white people and not blacks.
