The flu is a known quantity. We know its seasonal and hospitals and medical personal are used to dealing with it.

Covid-19 is still relative unknown. We're not sure if it is seasonal, and we don't know all the long term impacts to
it's survivors, such as kidney damage and blood clots. As Covid-19 becomes more understood, our reaction
will be more predictable.

It's like seeing a snake on the path in front of you, your reaction is always going to be to treat it with extreme caution until
you can identify what type of snake it is.

It ain't rocket science.

Like the other times we've shut down the country for other novel viruses and diseases.

You know, like H1N1 when the WHO projected 2 billion infections worldwide.

It's like when we banned sex and shut down clubs and bars as the AIDS death toll mounted 25-35 million and mandated testing and contact tracing.

 

Swine flu (H1N1) was a known entity, it had been circulating in pigs for ten years prior to jumping to humans. 17,000 deaths world-wide.

We knew that AIDS was sexually transmitted, again, a known quantity with a known prevention.

We still don't know the origin of Covid-19 and we don't know the long term complications nor if it's seasonal. Over 300,000 deaths worldwide. And growing.

It has nothing to do with science. It never did.

When it comes to the human psyche, yes. A known fear/reaction is predictable. An unknown fear/reaction is unpredictable.

We drive in cars even though we know there will be 10s of thousands of deaths from accidents every year.
At the same time, if a car model suddenly develops a defect that causes an extra 100 deaths, we shut that production line down until we get a handle on the cause.

Heath departments traced contacts of every AIDS case. They still do. What are you talking about?

 

Except viruses aren't unknowns. We've been living with them forever. We know that they infect people, make them sick, and cause some of them to die. We know that viruses spread mostly through intimate contact. We know that immune strength is the best defense against viruses. COVID is just one more virus in a world full of viruses. There was never any compelling reason to treat COVID fundamentally different than any other virus. It was just a big fear-mongering campaign based on nothing but pure hysteria and speculation.
