No one's arguing Pinochet's regime was not horrible and violated civil liberties.

Maybe the question is whether things would have been better and there would have been more freedom under the alternative?

The Soviet and Chinese systems violated civil liberties as well.
I'm not really sure whether they were better or worse than Pinochet's regime.

Right wing, Left wing, sometimes there is just totalitarianism and disregard for human rights and individual liberties.

What leads to all these situations is economic problems, lower standards of living, and people desperately struggling.

Exactly - I don't expect that Chile's extreme Left would have changed if Pinochet had politely appealed to them to see the error of their ways. Unfortunately, extreme action always calls for extreme re-action. That's how it works.

    You are.

If you can do it to Zuckerberg what is to stop the government from doing it to you?

If you really want to change Facebook, don't use it. Find an alternate platform that doesn't censor

Is there someone on the Right arguing the government should do that?

At least in the US, it was the Left pushing for government intervention in the so-called "net neutrality" concept.

You are. You are all protesting that Facebook should not be allowed to regulate what is posted on its private property. If FB is not going to be allowed to regulate what is put on FB then why do you think you should be allowed to say what is on your blog?

I was referring to jurisdictions where there are prison sentences if they fail to.

When it comes to the matter of hate, such laws are not truly necessary.

    Indeed not.

What's your excuse for ruthless Zionist "scumbaggery" in Palestine aka the Nakba & what "lessons of the holocaust" have been learned when almost half of Israeli Jews support ethnic cleansing? (1)

The German Zionist Federation was just as complicit in supporting National Socialist machinations as were the 150,000 Jews who served in Hitler's military(2) and police forces and Jewish terrorist Groups Like Lehi's leader, Avraham Stern(3) who celebrated Nazi victories & supported the Nazi cause.

German National Socialism had plenty of support around the world from Madison Square Garden(4) to England's "Cliveden Set" to the Ukraine.

In addition to the 150,000 Jews who fought for Nazism, 2 million non German Blacks, Asians, Slavs, Arabs, Spaniards, Frenchmen and others fought in Hitler's armies,(5) received Germany's highest awards & were promoted to the highest ranks in the German military with Hitler's full knowledge & approval.

Briefly put, blaming the Germans for Nazism is as intellectually flawed as blaming one country's population for global warming.

EXCERPT “Almost half of Jewish Israelis believe Arabs should be "expelled or transferred" from Israel, a survey has found.

A study carried out by the Pew Research Centre found that around one in five adults questioned “strongly agreed” with the controversial statement, which amounts to ethnic cleansing under some definitions."CONTINUED

    (2) "Hitler's Jewish Soldiers"
    https://www.amazon.com/Hitlers-Jewish-Soldiers-Descent-Military/dp/0700613587

EXCERPT "Contrary to conventional views, Rigg reveals that a startlingly large number of German military men were classified by the Nazis as Jews or "partial-Jews" (Mischlinge), in the wake of racial laws first enacted in the mid-1930s. Rigg demonstrates that the actual number was much higher than previously thought-perhaps as many as 150,000 men, including decorated veterans and high-ranking officers, even generals and admirals."CONTINUED

"Adolf Hitler’s Armed Forces: A Triumph for Diversity?"
    https://www.inconvenienthistory.com/1/3/3102

EXCERPTS " I ask those historians who still believe that Hitler and the Nazis were “white supremacists”: how do you account for the incredible degree of non-German and ethnic minority (i.e., 150,000 Jews and Jewish Mischlinge) collaboration during World War II? Again, some two million non-Germans helped the Nazis.

The important thing to realize is that had the Nazis been as racist as most historians have argued, then they could not possibly have garnered the immeasurable level of support that they did. Even after Stalingrad; Spaniards, Slavs, Franks, and tens of- thousands of other non-Germans continued to fight for the Nazis on a volunteer basis."CONTINUED

I think you have misunderstood my assertions.
I am not in any way supportive of Nazism but am supportive of people like your father, "...the unsung hero, with a wheelbarrow full of medals...", your mother and other Germans who were mere pawns in history.

My contention is that the younger Germans who have known none of the adversities endured by your parents & grandparents are in no position to shame those who were simply caught up in history.
I am an American military Veteran who served in Laos during the Viet Nam war so I have a slightly better understanding of what your father experienced than those who have not seen the horrors of combat.

My point is that I don't think that today's sanctimonious accusers would have behaved any differently than those whom they accuse & condemn if they had been in the same circumstances.

Ahhh, yes. Ban all the sites that you and yours deem hateful, even though most of the sites don't advocate violence. Only let sites that spew your particular brand of politics remain. Every thing else is hate speech. Let the radical muslims keep up their hate sites because they are not white. They are just jihadists not white supremacists. Allow the radical far-left (like CBS who advocated punching whites who do not flagellate themselves for being white) to keep their hates sites though. All that is necessary to feel justified in perpetrating physical violence against whites is to brand everyone who disagrees with you Nazis and white supremacists.

Would you agree that censorship by the church was and still is amoral, and totalitarian? Not so long ago people who preached against church doctrine were called heretics, and tortured. The radical left now brands non-self-hating whites as heretics and is now advocating for violence against them.

Censorship in any form is the road to totalitarianism; but it won't be the right who are the totalitarians. It will be those intolerant of ideas that differ from theirs--as it was with the church. It is getting to be like the Inquisition with the left determining what the truth is, and looking everywhere for non-conformists.

This thread is a clear example of a truism about censorship.

When a corporation censors speech and people like that speech they say 'censorship!!!'

If they don't like it they say 'its a private corporation and they can do what they like!'

Seems to me Facebook hasn't banned speech, just use of their platform.

What should Facebook be allowed to ban?

    Jihadists?
    Pornography?

    I can agree with that.
Should the many honorable soldiers have a monument, no.
Because it was by all means the wrong cause.
Did the NAZI do any good, no. Everything they did furthered their criminal cause. What ever they did, had just one purpose, to further their criminal cause.
Should todays Germany and Germans feel guilty because of the history of the Third Reich, no.
But the history puts a burden and a duty on them, never, ever to let it happen again.

Marginalizing the NAZI, like: they did good things, or saying Stalin or Mao and others did worse is the first step on that slippery road to justifying, or explaining why they had to, or not as bad and denial.

That can not happen and has to be called out.

Isn’t Pinochet the guy who rounded up his political opponents in a soccer stadium and murdered them?

Good, at least we agree on some basics. Even when we disagree I hope we can do so civilly & respectfully.

My first Post on this thread was: "Resorting to censorship is simply an admission that one can't refute the ideas being presented."
and I do not see why one cannot discuss or express all historical issues honestly & openly.

For example, you are bound to have some thoughts on this pending lawsuit.
As I understand the lawsuit, Germany is responsible for the therapy fees of all children of all holocaust survivors around the world.

Some will assert that Germany is responsible for these therapy fees. Are you legally allowed to discuss this lawsuit or is that another slippery slope?

"Holocaust Survivors' Children Sue Germany for Therapy Fees"
    https://www.haaretz.com/1.4952800

EXCERPT "Suit, filed in Tel Aviv, seeks funds to pay for biweekly therapy sessions for up to 20,000 affected by the scars of their parents.

The lawsuit marks the very first time that the German government will be asked to take responsibility and to care for those of the second generation in Israel and indeed, worldwide, attorney Gideon Fisher said before filing the suit at the Tel Aviv District Court."CONTINUED
