3 pts is a statistical tie, and it's as meaningful as trying to predict the outcome of a basketball game when one team has a 3 pt lead in the 2nd quarter. That said, Republicans are beginning to come to terms with the fact that Mitt "Father of ObamaCare" Romney is their only candidate who has a real chance of winning, although I think he's going to come across among most Americans as a fake aloof out-of-touch politician with typical policies favorable towards people like him.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Approval rating isn't the same as head to head matchups. On average Kerry had a lead over Bush in early 2004. Undecideds did not go to the challenger, as claimed by flounder. What did happen is that Kerry, like any challenger, faced more scrutiny throughout 2004 as the general election season began. Obama did also in 2008 but withstood the barrage. Real widespread scrutiny of Romney hasn't really begun yet.

What your link does show is that Obama's approval rating is similar to what Clinton's was at this time of his presidency, and just 6 points behind Reagan's. Both won re-election by large margins. I don't see Romney as being terribly more palatable than Dole.
