That's probably a high estimate on the guns/person rate.
And, of course, estimates are about all we have to go on as it is impossible to determine an accurate figure.

That is the point of law abiding citizens, they are not at all likely to use them for ill purposes. We already know that the vast, vast majority of gun owners are not criminals nor perpetrate crimes with guns. I in fact hope all the gun owners are using them on occasion, to stay in practice and or to just enjoy a nice day out shooting legal things...

The 12 trillion or 24 trillion figure is off. If every gun owner had 1,000 rounds for each gun (which, IMHO is an extremely high figure), the figure would be about 600 billion rounds, which is 1/20 of the figure they mentioned. It really doesn't matter. Most of the ammo is collecting dust and will never be shot much less at a human. I have 20+ year old ammo in my closet.

Pretty much. More households used to report gun ownership than now, so it may be that those who own guns own more guns now than say 50 years ago, but a lower percentage of households own guns now. Doesn't matter, as most guns are owned by law-abiding people, and are of no danger to you.

While the media tries to create a perception of violence off the proverbial scale... blood resulting from the law abiding and carrying citizens doesn't run in the streets and a good part of the population is oblivious to those that carry concealed. I suspect the majority of Americans would say they feel safer in the US than abroad... for many reasons.

Per capita, probably more common before. Prior to 1968 any American, regardless of age, could go into a hardware store and buy a gun. My grandfather bought his first handgun when he was 12-years old; he spent two summers doing every odd job he could find, until he could afford to walk into the store and bought a Colt Single Action in .38 WCF. He also bought the components to load his own ammunition, and became part of what some call "the gun culture." Everyone in town owned a gun; from cheap pocket revolvers everyone slipped in a pocket to run quick errands to fancy custom guns carried by the serious shooters in town. Gun ownership ran close to 100% throughout the Southwest... and crime and violence were a fraction of what they are now.
