The electoral college actually has a surprising number of benefits if you look at it closely; it helps suppress third parties (when prominent third parties normally add political instability), prevents wealthier and more politically enthusiastic states from dominating their cousins, and helps keep big money out of politics by making it so candidates only really have to campaign in a dozen or so states. It has problems, but we shouldn't just discard it.
