l. The starting pitcher starts off the inning giving up a single. The manager figures his starter is getting tired, so he brings in a reliever. The "fireman" walks three straight batters, forcing in a run. Another reliever replaces him and strikes out the side. The unlucky starter gets charged with a run, and the incompetent reliever doesn't. Shouldn't the starter get charged with .25 of a run and the first reliever .75 of a run? 2. In the 1959 World Series, White Sox catcher Sherm Lollar hit into a doubleplay that scored a run. The White Sox won 1-0, their last World Series victory for 46 years. Shouldn't Lollar have been given credit for an RBI? After all, that averages out to 9 runs a game. This is more like a Little League ruling. When it was put into the rulebook in the 19th Century, 9 runs a game may have been a low score.
A double-play means no RBI simply because even if it scores a run, it frequently kills what could otherwise have been a big inning.
Yeah, in the Little League or in the wild 19th Century baseball. That at bat by Sherm Lollar in the 1959 World Series won the game, 1 to nothing. It was typical of the White Sox to scratch and claw their way to victory, never hoping for a Big Inning. The Dodgers lost because they wouldn't make the play at the plate, following an obsolete strategy. The White Sox beat Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax, whom I once saw pitch a 10-hit shutout. Go for anything you get any way you can with a pitcher who could rest his arm by loading the bases, then bear down and strike out the side.
I understand what you're saying there, but a run is a run. I see exactly what you're saying and I don't have a huge issue with it, but a run is a run. In the White Sox case, it was the only run scored. And the batter didn't get credit for it?
stats .......... stats .............. good golly we don't need more stats in baseball. Why must we know that Ricky bats .356 against left handed pitchers who wear boxers but Ricky bats .275 against left handed pitchers who wear briefs? And to add to the boredom, they want more instant replay ...............
If with one out the batter lays down a a squeeze bunt with a runner at third but then gets thrown out at first , does he get an RBI? - - - Updated - - - BTW, If the bases are loaded with no outs and the guy hits into a double play, I'm not sure if he should get any bennies from that.
Tell it to Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax. It made him lose the only World Series game the White Sox would win for the next 46 years.
