    I wasn't going to come back, but when no one speaks out, time to think and reflect. Where are we drifting to? Another USA, another European Poland, or is she right with her observation when it comes to our country, our *stop the boats* Australia?

    Narau and other offshore concentration camps are the biggest shame in our modern history,
    extremely unaustralian!!!

    Any thoughts?

    But when will we be better? We had a chance to speak out during the Tampa episode. Hasn't improved since then.

    It will become better when we allow our inner me to look at others and say, hey that is a human being in need, and despite a different religion or skin color, I will help this human being.
    But with all this patriotism and populism and the creation of fear, we are drifting further and further away from being a good person............

    Tampa was the start of it I think. Howard seized on it to grab a victory. It went downhill in a handcart from there. The demonisation of refugees can bloody well stop right now.

    Help South America to get on its own feet and you might not need to fear too many *arrivals*.
    But, hey, what is in it for you? Exactly that......
    Might not happen under Trump, as he can't see the $ signs in it.....

    And how would we do that? The policies enacted by their ostencibly democratically elected governments have led to total ruin.

    Are you suggesting we interfere in their sovereignty and democratic self governance?

    Also, that sounds like a 'No' to accepting South American migrants. Was that a 'No'?

    Na,
    just help them to get into gear. Could be a win/win situation. Having some of your factories in South America, producing whatever, basically the creation of jobs.
    That doesn't mean they have to follow your model all along and become North Americans, with maccas at every corner and narrow minded (who else could have voted for Trump?) and fat people everywhere.

    Some here wish to follow the EU model to become non-European populated states. Some here think that letting people do whatever they want holds no consequences. Some here think being "better than this" means ruining their own country based on a stupid feeling.

    We should not let in economic migrants. We should only accept refugees who have taken the shortest route to a safe nation. No picking and choosing.

    I don't follow. If you are a genuine refugee you shouldn't be travelling half way around the world when there's a safe country next door.
