No claim was made about the actions of said law enforcement officers being standard.

Both this discussion, and its counterpart http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/shooting-of-rayshard-brooks-in-atlanta.573985/ are filled with individuals who are defending the individual in question, alleging that he essentially did nothing wrong, despite all of his actions being wrong.

the question on the part of yourself, who had the individual in question threatened up until that point. The answer being anyone and potentially everyone, since he was operating a motor vehicle while in an intoxicated state. From a legal perspective he posed the same risk to the public as an individual brandishing a firearm in the direction of others. Simply because he had managed to not injure or kill anyone up to that point does not change anything.

How do you know they knew? How did the shooter know if it was the other officers gun or not? It was dark. There was a struggle. Chaos. One of the cops was on the ground, knocked silly. He was barely on his feet. Once the chase began the pursuing officer probably thought he was alone and didn’t know if the shiny flashing object was the taser or his partners gun. It was literally seconds.

Armed violent fleeing subjects are a danger to everyone not just the officers. He could jack a car. Kidnap people. Run into traffic causing an accident. This individual is not worth the lives of innocent civilians. This guy gave up his innocence and benefit of the doubt the second he struck the cops while they did NOTHING WRONG. They were following all the rules. The video is there. They were following the playbook, calm, fairly ordinary until the guy started resisting and swinging.

The cops just can’t let everyone go if the run. Criminals will know this and won’t even bother anymore if they know cops can’t shoot. It’s will be chaos.

    It wasn't.

So asked for the law and then you said it is standard, so I asked for the standard now you say you didn't make the claim. So which is it?

Folks are not defending him, we just said there was other options to shooting him and I didn't say let him go before you tell that false crap.

What risk did he pose at the time the officers starting knocking on his window?

Does Atlanta PD carry yellow guns? They had already frisked him, so they knew he didn't have any weapons. The taser can only be discharged twice and when Brooks discharged it the 2nd time it was done.

So when the officer discharged his weapon did he put innocent civilian lives in danger? That is why we have police because we have folks who break the law.

I never claimed they should just let him go, I have said from the beginning they should ARREST him. I don't think the officer will be prosecuted because he has a valuable claim that he was in fear and think he was more pissed because he and his partner had just got their butts handed to them.

What career criminal. You are the one who said he took to bullets to the chest. You aren't qualified to discuss this.

They tried to arrest him. He resisted. And he posed a risk driving drunk. You know the thing that kills loads of people every year, about 10k. They were preventing him becoming or causing another statistic. And he was shot for attacking police, fleeing and putting MORE people at risk. And cops can shoot an armed dangerous suspect that he was. The ONLY other option was not pursuing him And they could lead to more lives in danger. Drunk crazy person is not good. This happens ALL the time. Idiots resist arrest and get shot. And they DESERVE IT, especially when you look at the person this guy was. No loss to society for sure. He’d be back in prison right now if he just obeyed their very simple commands. Guess he thought why not run. Better to get shot. Better than going to prison again.

If the cops didn’t pursue and he jumped in the closest car and got into a car chase then innocent people could have been hurt. Under the circumstances it’s a win win.

And maybe YOU aren’t defending him. But plenty of others are. The corrupt DA is a scumbag for doing what he did. Will look forward to seeing the charges dropped since he didn’t do anything wrong when sane level headed people look at the law.

He wasn't driving when they approached him.

Actually they woke him up, at the time he was posing a risk to anyone.

The guy was drunk and already stumbling, they could have done what police do everyday CHASED him down and cuffed his butt. How many people do the officer put at risk firing 3 rounds into him?

Had this young man been white there is no way in hell he would have been shot in the back.

    They should have pursued.

    I can't speak for others.

It probably is a political move on his part, I don't think he should have tried prosecuting the officer, even though, I disagree with him shooting this man in the back.

That's easy to say, but what would you have done if you were just shot at by an intoxicated man? Just let him go? Pray he doesn't get into another car and hurt someone else? What?

Brooks would be alive today if he simply didn't resist arrest and assault the Cops with his fists and a deadly weapon. He would have had his day in Court as everyone else who gets arrested. He alone decided to resist arrest and assault the Police officers trying to arrest him. The Cops didn't ask him to resist and assault them for sport.

The laws of many states on who private cititizens may kill do not form an argument on what police may do.

You just haven't been following along.

Case after case shows that police are willing to kill black folks who are not posing a threat, whose violence is oriented to nothing more than escape, who are not posing a danger to others.

In this case the police didn't even bother to render assistance after shooting him in the back. In the Floyd case, 4 officers were kneeling next to him as they murdered him. In the Castillo case he had stopped his car, had his girlfriennd and young daughter in the car and they shot him several times with NO justification. When an Australian woman in Minneapolis (again) calls 911 and the police come and shoot her dead. When even a police officer gets shot dead by undercover cops breaking in and rainig fire on the sleeping occupants - collecting multiple gunshot wounds while SLEEPING! The list goes on and on.

There is a pattern here, and it absolutely has to stop.

Minority communities are not going to have functioning police service while the police can not be trusted, while they have to be considered a mortal threat at all times, while calling the police is likely to make matters worse.

    That's not an acceptable question.

And, my bet is that you know that, as it's a foundation of our system of justice.

You don't understand. When a Cop is arresting you for breaking the law, do not resist. Do not assault them. Do not point or fire a deadly weapon at them. How hard is it for law breakers to stop breaking the law and not resist arrest?

Again, if Brooks would have simply remained calm while he was being arrested, he would still be alive today. Brooks and Brooks ALONE made the decision to resist arrest & assault the Police Officers. Why can you not understand this?

Question for all the Cop haters, who are you going to call when a criminal breaks into your home or poses a threat to you & your family? I suggest to all those who want to de-fund the Police, let's add your name to a registry so the Cops know who despises them. That way they can leave you alone to peacefully let the criminals do what they need to you & your family while you kindly deal with him/her in a calm manner so that the criminal won't get hurt or even worse, killed. Sound fair?

Are you serious? Because the threat of a speeding ticket does absolutely nothing to make me drive the speed limit. I don’t even drink, but if I did, the chance of getting a DWI, and the penalties that come with it would most definitely make me think twice about it.

I understand how it is supposed to work.

What you are not understnding is that it is not working that way in far too many locations - as can clearly be seen.

There is a large community for whom trust in your view, in the view that IS how it is supposed to work, simply doesn't exist.

Policing works when the people trust the police.

When the police lose the trust of the people (which IS the case), things go downhill really fast. In particular, the belief you wish to be universal just doesn't exist anymore.

There iare LOTS of things that don't work when white supremacy takes hold. Policing is only one of them.

So what would give Brooks the impression to not trust the Cops who were peacefully dealing with him for 45 minutes before they peacefully tried to place him under arrest?

Again, Brooks death was caused by Brooks resisting arrest and assaulting the Police officers. If he hadn't of resisted, he would still be alive.

This is just a gross misunderstanding.

Police froces are not some unified body that all behave the same way, all have similar training, all have equal respect for those they are policing, all have equal equipment, all have adequate backup, etc..

I fully believe that not all police would murder Floyd like that, or murder Castillo like that, or murder Brooks like that, or kill that police officer who was asleep, or kill that Australian who called 911, etc.

    And, ALL communities want policing.

Those who claim support for defunding police are not in agreement on how they want to proceed with improving policing or on what "defunding" even means. In some cases, people are responding to the presence of paramiliary equipment such as small tanks. As some of our overseas military action decreases, our arms industry has found policing to be an expanding new market.

My own view is that there are some police forces that simply have to be removed in their entirety and then replaced with different leaders, different officers, different training, etc. But, my bet is that this will require MORE funds on a continuing basis, not less funding. And, the policing is absolutely going to require far more unity between the police and the community. That won't be easy as humans don't easily turn around and trust those that they have been taught not to trust.

You can't pretend being made a captive a peaceful act.

Brooks death was caused by police shooting an unarmed man in the back and then failing to render assistance as he lay on the ground dying.

I agree that there are bad cops. No doubt. What I do not agree with is everyone believing that all Cops who kill a perp for doing something stupid is bad. Obviously the Cops that murdered Floyd are bad and should be held responsible.

Brooks on the other hand put his own life in danger with his own actions. Not to mention that he put other innocent people's lives in danger by driving drunk. But Brooks supporters refuse to talk about that for some strange reason. Regardless, after peacefully dealing with Brooks for 45 minutes, the Cops verbally told him that he was going to be put under arrest for DUI. They told him verbally to turn around and put his arms behind his back, calmly as well. Brooks then proceeded to resist his arrest for being intoxicated behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, which is against the law in every State in our Country by the way. Brooks then doubled down on a terribly dumb decision an decided to physically assault the Police Officers with his fists and with a deadly weapon because he didn't want to go to jail for breaking the law and putting lives at risk by driving drunk.

Brook's situation and Floyd's situation dealing with Police aren't even close.
