It's interesting to point out that judges in Boston have also sometimes denied bail altogether for weapons charges (in the absence of any other crime or criminal history).

So it's not that they're all "soft". They just have their priorities all twisted around.

Not necessarily. It could just indicate that the Supreme court isn't reviewing the majority of cases that do deserve further review.

The Supreme court isn't a run-of-the-mill Appellate court, and usually only takes on exceptional cases. Theoretically it is another level of possible appeal, but in general practice it actually isn't. Primarily because it would be very difficult for a single court to take on so many cases.

That would be like if there was only a single police officer in a large city and trying to argue that because there are so few arrests the crime rate must be really low.

 

Bail should have been higher if he assaulted a cop. However the constitution has a provision about reasonable bail. That's the real issue here. If the guy had prior violent offenses, the DA should have pushed for higher or no bail. What did the DA recommend his bail be set at? It's a tough call. On one hand, the guy is innocent until proven guilty and is entitled to a defense, on the other hand an out of control guy gets turned loose on the streets. I bet now this jerk wishes he had been held in jail. Maybe then he could have cleared his head, gotten some help and straightened himself out. Now he's screwed for life and innocent people are dead. More victims of the idiotic drug war.
