Of course it's massively costly to shut down. On what planet is that not true?

The point of the exercise is to limit the TIME we're shut down. If you do a half arsed job of it, the whole thing will take much longer .. and every delay in returning to business has exponential impact on long term economic recovery. Far too many businesses won't survive long term restrictions, but plenty can survive short term complete shut down.

People who are out of work can't last a week. Fortunately MI can call out the National Guard to shoot those hungry people.

Trump has no sensible, coherent policy for reopening is the problem.

He told the governors he was charge, they said no, and Trump backed down.

Don't be melodramatic, please. And the "protestors"* in MI have backed down.

What about banning the sale of seeds and garden supplies? A lot of people depend on growing their own food. Their lifestyle and budgets all depend on it.. They can't survive without it - especially when they can't go get a job or second job as they might with a failed crop. But a governor who doesn't realize that food doesn't come from the grocery store just prevented all those from planting the seeds to feed their families.

On March 14, I left my city home for my lake home because that's where my wife's medical stores are. We live week to week, or at most month to month, on her supplies in town and have for 8 years with only one time we ran out of hydrogen peroxide for a day (Walmart had run out while switching suppliers) and I couldn't clean her medical supplies.. I use 1 to 2 bottles every day to keep her supplies and equipment cleaned. When that one day happened, we went to Sam's club stocked up at our lake house and and also got enough to keep at least a couple weeks or more in town. Sam's club was just 75 miles away and I could always get a couple dozen bottles, even more if I ordered ahead online.

When things shut down and I couldn't get peroxide anywhere, we grabbed our emergency kits and headed to the lake. We had no choice.

Had I not been able to travel between my two homes, by now, my wife would have an upper-respiratory infection at best, full pneumonia possibly. We'd have to take her to the ER and expose her to a virus that would almost certainly kill her.

No one was harmed by me traveling a few hours. I stopped once to fill the tank, used a glove, and hand-sanitizer after I disposed of the glove.

In Michigan, she'd just be another statistic.

And trump just flip flopped again on whether the Georgia governor should reopen the state this week.
He has absolutely no sense of real leadership and is unwilling to put the effort into doing his job.
He prefers to spend his day tweeting obsessively about himself and ducking responsibilities while blaming others.
He’s the worst possible potus at this time for us and for the world, which hoped for better leadership from America during this time.
And the barbaric corrosiveness of right wing ideology is being laid bare for all to see again.

I do agree that if it's safe to do so, and doesn't involve the public in any way (ie, you own the vacation property, it's rural, and it's not an apartment or townhouse), it's FAR better to be well away from cities. The problems arise when small towns are exposed to outsiders, but don't have the healthcare infrastructure to deal with an outbreak if someone from outside brings it in. EG, could the local - likely small and ill equipped hospital handle your wife's care, plus that of multiple infections if it were brought in by you inadvertently? It's a tricky moral position, to be sure. Having said that, I'd probably be inclined to do what you've done, and get the hell out of Dodge.

Now THAT I don't understand. It's way too suspicious for my comfort. Seeds can safely be bought online, so they can't claim it's infection control.

It's undoubtedly control, but maybe not of a kind which is in the peoples' interest (as infection control is). I can't help thinking it's about preventing people from becoming too self-reliant, and therefore not spending as much. Perhaps they want you all helpless and utterly dependent on the system? Maybe that's the only reason the old economy stayed more or less afloat. Either way, it's thoroughly sinister. I'd be doing everything in my power to grow food in response, if I lived in America. Even if it meant collecting my own seed from store bought vegetables.

Indeed, it is, and the Trump team is going cry miserably and bitterly at their terrible losses as the upper MW goes Democratic.
