If you use your brain you might be able to figure it out. Same reason there is not a lot of black hockey players.

    Really?

    Heres the US percentages.

    http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/06/13/18934111-census-white-majority-in-us-gone-by-2043?lite

Seems it would be right about where it should be, maybe a little lower than what is represented in Society if we were to go by that.

In the end though they arent simply choosing colors to fill teams in MLB. There is a process used, which has 0 bearing on National Demographics. Perhaps this percentage of Blacks in the MLB were the only ones interested enough, and talented enough to make the cut? Why does it need to be any more than that, and why in the world would we need to investigate it....

    Big waste of time.

What is interesting in reading the article. The commission is not concerned about the actual numbers of black players making the majors which is about 8.6% But how many potentially good black and other players are slipping away due to lack of infrastructure in developing talent. College scholarships have been drying up which means a lot of potential players from disadvantage backgrounds are not seeing the opportunities they did in the past.

Which is unfortunate for all to be sure, but I wonder...is baseball still "Americas pastime"? Perhaps baseball just isnt what it used to be. Seems Football might have passed it by, maybe Basketball as well.

I dont see as many people talking about baseball as I once may have.

Black, white, Hispanic or Asian; if they can't either throw the fastball for a strike or hit the fastball, they have no place in MLB.

Which is a valid point, and something the commission has to deal with. I'd agree with you the US is a nation of football heads rather than baseball

I dont believe the commission is arguing that at all. They are concerned that the kids with the talent to make it, somehow get a shot. The owners clearly dont care about the background of a player. You just have to look at the what countries a lot of players are from. But if the talent pool is getting smaller then ultimately the game suffers because we are not seeing rosters of elite level players.

How many white kids with high potential slip away and never reach the majors?

The quotas/black brothers keepers didn't think about that.

If you bother to read the article you will see the commission is concerned about player depth regardless of race, and nowhere is there any mention of quotas

I double checked the story just for you and found the words hadn't changed since the first time I read them.

    What are odds of that?

Anyway the USAToday headline is pretty true to the story itself:

"Bud Selig to create task force on blacks in baseball"

The story is all about Jackie Robinson, blacks and four teams without a single black player and what a cryin shame that is.

Maybe baseball won't set quotas for each team.

But if gentle persuasion doesn't get more blacks into baseball I don't think quotas are out of the question.

General manages will be telling the coaches "Who cares if he can't hit or pitch or field?"

We need a black on the roster to keep the segregated no-whites-allowed Congressional Black Caucus happy.

College baseball is trending down. MLB is gonna have to revive its minor league system.

As for loss of black talent, MLB is hardly the only ones with this problem. Look closely at college football. It's getting whiter and more Hispanic and less black. Yeah, the top black athletes are still there but two things are happening. 1. The other guys are catching up. and 2. A lot of black athletes are disqualifying themselves through drugs and crime. Actually this is nothing new. Julius Erving tells the tales of his schoolyard nemesis "Herman the Helicopter." If a renowned leaper like Dr. J called him a "helicopter" what was his vertical jump? But the guy went nowhere because of drugs and crime.

If you are a right-handed power hitter right now you won't stay in the minors long. MLB is starving for righthanded power hitters.

    Quotas are racism.

I agree with your points, and I dont think (Unlike what some are trying to claim) this is a racism issue at all. MLB is examining its product, what can be done to make it better and more attractive to potential players and fans. Most sports are doing this all the time, most are just not influential enough to get an article written about their efforts in mainstream news

Shows how much you know about baseball lol. You left out two of the greatest Willams and Dimaggio, but you mentioned Nolan Ryna who is the weakest pitcher in the group you mentioned. And puting a DH in there as well shows you have no credibilty. Jus sayin

    Taxcutter,

The reason college baseball is trending down is because most players are taken out of highschool especcially the best ones. Plus throw in the cheap forgien talent and well there ya go!

    Taxcutter says:
Indeed the best players always did go straight from high school to the minors, but for the last 20 years or so, MLB has also tapped the college programs. But (mainly thanks to Title VII) a lot of schools are shutting down baseball programs. The college programs did provide an opportunity for exceptional athletes (Bo Jackson, Dion Sanders and Michael Jordan come to mind) to at least take a look at baseball. As thiose programs go away, black football/basketball players no longer have that opportunity.

Unlike football and basketball, baseball ultimately rests on two skills. Hitting and pitching. If you cannot hit or pitch, it really doesn't matter how good an athlete you are. If you can, it really doesn't matter if you are a good athlete or not. Some dubious athletes are in the Hall of Fame because they could either hit or pitch.

Football coaches in particular think they can take a good athlete who has no football skills and make him a good player. There isn't a good football program around that doesn't have a guy on the team with concrete hands and a 4.2 forty time. Basketball to a lesser extent particularly if you are tall enough. Viz: Rik Smits. But baseball demands that no matter how fast you run or how high you can jump, you absolutely must be able to pitch or hit.

I just there will be more African Americans in baseball in due time. Kennesaw Mountain Landis didn't allow minorities, only whites when he was commissioner
