More Gun Violence” 4 Shot, Killed in 6 Hours in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. – “Oakland police are investigating four fatal shootings that took place in different parts of the city within six hours, the latest outbreak of violence in a city that saw 131 homicides last year.

Friday's victims included a 17-year-old high school senior who died at the scene of the attack at around 8:15 p.m. Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson blamed groups "involved in ongoing feuds" for the shootings.

The second shooting was reported at around 3 p.m. when a 30-year-old Stockton man's body was found. It's believed the man - identified as Larry Lovette – was shot elsewhere in the city and his body taken to the Glenview district, police said.

Then at around 4:15 p.m., a 20-year-old Oakland man was found shot in his car in the driveway of a home. Eddiebo Rodriguez died after he was taken to a hospital, police said.

The 17-year-old - identified by authorities as Ken Harbin - died in an area that's plagued by gangs and gun violence. Neighbors said they heard dozens of gunshots Friday night.

"Shooting happens out here all the time," said Armando Ramirez, 37, who was walking by the scene of Harbin's shooting with two small children Saturday morning. "It's a part of life here."

Two other people were killed earlier this week in separate shootings in the city.

The police department has 612 officers, far short of the 925 recommended by the city's strategic plan, Councilwoman Libby Schaaf said.

"Basic public safety resources are not in place," she said. "I know we can responsibly afford new investments in public safety."

Violent crime in Oakland rose 23 percent in 2012, prompting the city to announce last month the hiring of former New York City police commissioner and Los Angeles police chief Bill Bratton as a consultant on how to reduce crime and combat gang violence.”

All of these murders were carried out by use of guns, and it doesn’t matter if those guns were registered or not; we see a proliferation of weapons that are making America unsafe for innocent people to walk the streets.

If guns have been stolen, it should be entered into a nationwide data base, as should the owner’s information be entered at time of purchase giving all information, with all relevant information carried forward to show any change of ownwership, if it has been stolen etc so that we can track that information.

Plus any foreign purchased weapons should be entered into this data base, along with any police records of current owners of guns.

With the cuts in numbers of police due to austerity practice, the safety and well-being of citizens is now at a crisis level in much of the country and we must do everything we can to bring an end to the massacres, daily shootings, and brutalizing of American citizens in our country.

When will the number of daily killings finally force our government to take assault weapons, magazines, and hand guns out of Americans’ frantic grip, even though the owners of those guns keep screaming about their 2nd Amendment rights?

I believe my child has a right to go into 1st grade at any elementary school in America free from the fear of being murdered. Traumas of that magnitude have no place in any 1st grader’s life. It would be a no brainer for me: My child’s rights supercede any freaking 2nd Amendment rights of a white supremacist who is determined to own many guns in an effort to protect himself against the boogeyman.

 

Could you for once please explain why you keep trying to associate 2nd amendment rights with white supremacist? In practically every gun related thread you post, you make this association.

Oakland is a cesspool of gang and drug related violence. It's Detroit-west.

The notion that new gun control laws will deter the bottom of the barrel thugs that roam Oakland is as stupid as it gets.

Responsible gun owners want york child to be safe.

A LAW-ABIDING "white supramist" as you call them has EVERY RIGHT to own guns to protect themselves, family and homes against criminals!

California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country with military style rifles AND ALL high capacity magazines being banned.

 

It's the lack of logic and common sense forever lost in a liberal brain.

 

So provide that right to your child. Why should anyone else be force to provide something that you feel that your kid deserves? If you want your kid to go to a safe school, put him in one. Don't force try to take rights away from 100 million other people just try to give your kid something. Provide it for him yourself.

So in six hours, four separate individuals decided and acted upon impulses to kill another human being, and the problem is guns? Makes sense I'm sure...

 

Especially when most of the shootings are perpetrated by black citizens.

 

The city is a mismanaged liberal cesspool. They've cut their police force to a skeleton force. They are losing business faster than the state itself. People won't drive in that city and many have fled as the gang related violence has spread to all parts of the city. It has been getting worse for years. I remember barbequing at a friends house on many an occasion. The constant gun fire and sirens playing off the buildings and hills reminded me of a war zone.

The murder (and all violent crime) rate has been falling in the US for over 2 decades now, and it just shy of the lowest it's EVER been. As for the 2nd Amendment, unless (and until) you get it repealed, the American People have an inviolable right to own firearms. As for so-called "assault weapons", there is no such thing. It's a political term that has nothing to do with any specific firearm function.
