Since the whole subject is crazy and the actual problem is the ever increase human population out stripping the FINITE resources of the world, I thought i would add another weird scheme along the lines of Mick 2's dyke from Cromer to Mablethorpe. This is suggested by Billy Clandon:

The problem with wind ,tide and Sun power is that it is produced when Nature dictates not when we need it. Of course if all the power producing networks of the world were interconnected than even with existing sources a more efficient system would arise the - the power generators of those time zones in darkness need not shut down but instead power those in daylight.
If such a system was in existence an interesting possibility occurs: the tidal pattern of the earth generated by the Sun consists of two bulges( these are due to the fact that only the centre of the Earth is at the correct velocity for its orbit the velocity part nearer the Sun is too slow for its orbital velocity and attempts to move nearer, conversely that on the opposite side is too fast and that part tries to to move away ) now these travel round the Earth as it rotates. The largest height being near the equator. If there was some means of harnessing this energy ( vast squeezable bags? ) and these were distributed in open water - not in a straight line since the Land masses would interupt. But say South China Sea to US west coast, a new line then running to Panama and continuing the other side to North Africa, then a new line to Mozambique/Tanzania which can continue across the Indian ocean to Australia, where South China can take up again. Then with a world integrated network one would have a virtually continuous power source!

Absolute nonsense, generation is best when it is spatially close to the load. You are never gong to get electrons to move faster than the speed of light and when we are talking about 60Hz the speed of light over long distances isn't that fast. In the event of an event by the time the far off source can stabilize the effected area the system has already collapsed.
