Navy releases map showing location of fleet positions during Benghazi attacks

The Navy has released a map showing the locations of its fleet positions near Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11, 2012 — when terrorists killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The unclassified map — which was obtained by a retired Air Force veteran investigating the attacks through a public records request and published online by the group Judicial Watch — shows that there were dozens of vessels in the region during the attacks.

On the day of the attacks, the Navy had two aircraft carriers, four amphibious ships, 13 destroyers, three cruisers, a dozen small Navy boats and a command ship, Judicial Watch noted in its analysis of the map.

The veteran who obtained the map — Air Force Lt. Col. Randall R. Schmidt — has used the map to argue that destroyers could have responded to the attack.

“The point is there were enough forces to respond,” Schmidt said.

But the military has maintained that they were not equipped to adequately respond.

During a May 21 hearing on the military’s role in the attacks convened by the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Darryl Roberson, the vice director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, explained that the military had no realistic options available.

“It is not like a fire station,” Roberson said of the military during the May hearing. “We don’t have assets to respond like a fire call, jump down the pole and respond for any American that is under fire anywhere in the world.”

It appears that the Benghazi cover-up continues to disintegrate. Will we soon get leaks that it was Obama refused to send help to the abandoned in Benghazi because it interfered with his re-election? Will Panetta finally tell the truth about what really happened that night?

 

Really? Where's the cover up part? Which part of this information indicates a cover up?

 

The location is irrelevant. The Commander-in-Chief was asleep during the raid, or was playing with Mr. Love. The 3' O-Clock call was never received.

 

I asked about the alleged cover up....where is it?

 

Aww, come on... Anything and everything was done to minimize the political fallout past the elections, and successfully. Was it not for the cover up, we may have had Mitt for president for over a year now, and starting to see the light.

 

The BENGHAZI BLAME GAME IS OVER! What else you got?? This is partison pissing in the wind! I've read the contemperanous as well as the 'wrap up' accounts and it was very tragic to say the least but (*)(*)(*)(*) HAPPENS. Particularly in volatile parts of the world. BEIRUT or BENGHAZI. Amazing how mute these BENGHAZI CONSPIRACY CLOWNS were over 1 night when the FIASCO in the other 'B' city BAGHDAD went on for close to 5 1/2 years!

 

The map shows all effective help to have been at least several hours away....It does not address help from US bases in Italy, who could have been on station in a couple of hours if tasked.

 

Yep, just like the R has their own constitution and bible and science and medicine, apparently they have a different CLOCK. HOURS away apparently are minutes away when they want to make a PARTISAN point.

 

So where's the cover up?

What are you talking about??? Did an ambassador get killed in Baghdad because a president was a sleep??? and then covered it up by saying that the murder was essentially caused by a youtube video..



Msnbc.. that's some trippy stuff... Open your mind and don't take comedians so seriously... after all, they are just comedians... you should not rely on them for your news and facts...

 

If the political hacks who ran the response HAD acted instead of dithered, the second two deaths could have been avoided. If the idiots who run the State Dept had allowed sufficient security before the event, there might not have been any attack at all.

 

Cover up of what?

I guess it's just unfortunate that FOX News inspired innuendo doesn't add up to a conspiracy.

 

The question is no whether Obama was asleep. Was he Chooming on gunja when he was told of the Terrorist attack?

 

I wonder if any of the conspiracy nit wits have thought about the options any commander would have to consider? For example: If troops were sent in to rescue the ambassador who and what would be waiting for them when they got there? Could the attack on the consulate be designed as bait for an ambush? Would aircraft be able to intervene effectively....or would they be met by a hundred portable SAMs? The right wing conspiracy theorists apparently believe real life is just like a movie.

 

Let's not pretend as though you ever had a serious question about anything.

 

Jesus, man, 70% of Americans do not like and do not trust Obama, which should include a hefty number of Democrats... Except Obamabots and these whose livelihood depends on welfare checks.

If someone gives me the factual latitude and longitude of the nearest aircraft carrier I will calculate the distance in miles. Then we can grab the speed of the aircraft on those carriers and calculate within a few minutes how long it would have taken to get help there. Math is a bich to disprove.

 

I'd be surprised if some folks hadn't already speculated on that too.
