Not even Z is that stupid. He even told the cops where he thought Martin was going.

He also told the police that he was worried that Martin might be laying in ambush for him.

Think for a change. If you are a burglar and you have been made and want to escape and evade, are you going to go down a well-lit street where the observer in a vehicle can catch you, or are you going to go down a dark alley?

trying to make a guess about where someone is going is not considered following. you see when you follow someone you see them the whole time and know exactly which direction they are headed and can see where they are going.
