In a review of media coverage of the US war against the population in El Salvador, New York Times media critic and reporter John Corry laments that: New York Times foreign correspondent Raymond Bonner (who was demoted for exposing the El Mozote Massacre) investigated the guerilla's human rights record and how much popular support they received from the population: The "loss" of El Salvador would not have caused the collapse of the empire but as Corry reported, "if El Salvador fell to the rebels, other countries in Central America would fall too," and then the dominos would make their way to the major oil producing states: Venezuela, Colombia etc:
