Tennis Australia gave him a medical exemption to allow him to play in the tournament. He still had to follow all the rules for getting into the country. Two different things.

Djokovic organised his charity event at a time when all other international tennis competitions were suspended due to covid. The dates it was held were during what would normally have been Wimbledon fortnight.
There was zero requirement to social distance or wear masks. Bearing in mind there was no vaccine at the time this was very irresponsible and it led to several players and support staff becoming infected. In fact the final was cancelled due to one of the players testing positive.

Australia Covid numbers surge as omicron outbreak strains domestic politics

Tempers fray in Australia as COVID-19 cases hit new highs

Seven day average 65,492 Total population 25,821,000
    and over 90% vaxxed..

The Vax is really doing it's job :applause::thumbsup:

    California
Seven day average 78,095 Total Populating 39.56 million and 74% one poke 54% two poke

    And that's without internment camps.

Losing the Ashes on home ground, yup, that hurts.
England have won the Ashes in Australia 14 times in 36 attempts.
Exactly the same amount of times Australia has won the Ashes in England in the same number of attempts.
Both sides have won or retained the Ashes 22 times at home.
I doubt there is any other international sporting rivalry in history which is closer run.

No fear Cricket losing support here with our enthusiastic Indian immigrants. They are even more focussed on Cricket than we are!

Thanks Monte for summarizing it for me. I am conflicted about this because I contracted COVID (November 2020) and I had NO risk factors. NONE. I still have no idea how I got it. Given this, I have no choice but to conclude that mitigation efforts are not all they are cracked up to be.

Nevertheless, I concede that we have to do the best we can and proceed with caution and I can certainly understand why this would cause backlash. Public figures, regardless of the reason for their celebrity status, have an ethical obligation to represent their sponsors, fans and others in the most positive light. So, notwithstanding COVID and variants, the appropriate response is to err on the side of caution and it does not appear that he did that.

You are correct, Aussies f'ing things up yet again. I think it's hilarious and they once again are a laughing stock. Australian Tennis"come on your exempt" government "uh we didn't even know we had a national tennis association". You can't make this up.... I have a feeling this is going to boomerang on them.

    Yep.... I'd say it is

    14 day deaths (per cap)

    USA - 20,038 (6.0)
    Aus - 127 (.5)

    https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#global-counts-rates

And that is without governors actually trying to kill their constituents....

Get back to me when you know more about the 65K that just tested positive and are OVER 90% vaxxed that's the interesting point I'm making ;)

The Vaccine will stop the transmission and we will achieve herd immunity, well SORT OF LMFAO

The Vaccine is accomplishing 2 of the primary purposes for which Fatty pushed for it to be developed... even if he never figured those out himself until much later...

You wouldn't get a true answer because a very important element is being suppressed ;)

He is not vaccinated, has always been open about it and has been a vocal opponent of mandated vaccination, just in case anyone thought he was trying to 'sneak in' or something. The tournament organizers want him there because a tennis championship that discludes the current champion would be silly, and they pushed for an exemption. The local govt doesn't want him there because he undermines their agenda of pushing vaccines. And lets be clear- thats precisely what it is. One known guy is perfectly easy to prevent from spreading covid, so public safety isn't the issue. The issue is the optics. He is being made an example of. Which I'm not saying is wrong in this case, even sports superstars should be required to abide by the same laws (or 'rules', not sure of the legal specifics in Aus) that everyone else is, even if those laws/rules are absolutely terrible and ridiculous, they should still be applied consistently. I also oppose mandates, but I have to commend the local govt here for not making exceptions to the rules for famous people because I hate that just as much. Though given the money involved in sports, I'll be surprised if he isn't eventually allowed to play in the tournament.

    Two corrections.
It was a federal authority that rejected his visa not the local government. Victoria state approved the visa but it's Border Control who are refusing him entry.
Djokovic has not been open about his vaccine status. He has consistently refused to reveal it as recently as last October.
