The first confirmed case of Coronavirus in the US was 19 Jan 2020. HHS declared a public health emergency on 31 Jan 2020. 5 days shy of that '2 mo mark', there are 2,952 confirmed corona cases in US.

The only part this gets right is that the country didn't lose it's collective minds. Why not you ask? Because President Obama addressed the nation when the number of cases globally could be literally counted on your fingers and toes. During this address less than 3 weeks after the first case anywhere in the world he announced a national health emergency which allowed congress to appropriate emergency funding which they did. Included in that funding was tests for the H1N1 flu that were developed two days after the first case was identified. During that address he also calmed fears by not minimizing the danger ahead but made a call for people to become vigilant and to follow the rules of frequent hand washing, sneezing into your sleeve, not shaking hands and staying home when you are sick. People who believe that they can participate in protecting themselves feel empowered and don't panic. It's the unknown and confusion that causes a sense of helplessness and panic. Another key factor, he didn't tell the population about his efforts, he talked about the team of doctors and scientists working on the problem. A good leader doesn't pat himself on the back because that leads to mistrust and resentment.

OK, the number of hospitalizations and infections are in the ballpark but not the deaths.

That October, 6 months after patient zero, a vaccine was developed and then Obama declared a national emergency which, unlike a national health emergency, allowed for a suspension of rules and allowed for a rapid deployment of the vaccine. By December it became available to all and he himself got vaccinated on television as an example to follow.

In the end, the number of deaths were on a par with any flu. There was little panic buying anywhere and life went on pretty much normally. It all came down to transparency, steady, single minded leadership and a populace with a common goal.
