Yes I admit it is dangerous to dial, talk and especially text on your cell phone when driving but is this going a little to far or is this a national ploy to curb free speech and collect revenue such as tickets? Not only is this a ban on Federal roadways but on any roadway such as rural roads and dirt roads off the beaten path. This move also could considered a attempt to force decreased productivity for businesses who's work resides from within their vehicles. What say you?

The article is not clear. In the states that have already banned hand-held cel pone use while driving, we still have those who think the cel phone should not even be used hands free.

Hands and eyes-free cell phone use should be no problem to allow.

Despite claims that even hands and eyes free talking on the cel phone AT ALL is "dangerous", I have been very suspicious of this "research" that does not differentiate between TEXTING on a cel phone and talking hands-free.

It is ludicrous to equate the two practices, since texting requires hands and eyes while talking requires neither..

All the phone makers have to do is add a circuit that will disable the phone when it's moving. It'll take about three seconds to design such a feature.

Wouldn't have much impact in L.A. or New York, where pedestrians can out pace the cars.

Having a phone conversation with hands-free technology isn't much different than having a conversation with someone in your car. Banning all cell phone use, even with hands free technology would be asinine. At that point they might as well ban talking in your car, period.

Can't say I've ever held a piece of metal closer to my ear when I can't hear the person in the car with me.

It's beyond me why anyone wants to engage in asinine conversations and texting anyway, especially while driving.

I think it would be a good idea. Might actually save some lives. Anyone who texts, dials or talks on a phone held to their head is a moron; its one thing to have blue tooth, but anything else is irresponsible.

Using a hands free device is no different to singing along with the radio. Just ban texting and speaking on mobiles, unless they are hands free.

    President Trivial at his best.

With all the major issues facing the country Obama finds this to put his stamp on.

Well, President Trivial could not have gotten where he is without equally clueless voters supporting him.

But it's so typical of liberals who want all the power to be consolidated in a one-size-fits-all central government whether it's in Paris, Moscow or Washington DC.

I am all for the ban of cell phone use while driving but the timing of this is laughable. After 3 1/2 years of jet set vacations and playing rock star Obama only has a few months now to convince America he is doing something worth while as PoTUS. So far this week free rubbers and attempting to take credit for the auto bailout that happened a month before he took office has been the best they can dig up

Having observed how erratic driving can be of those using a cell phone while driving (not including hands free), I think it would be a good idea.

And FYI, its nothing to do with free speech.

As much as I disagree with anything the Obama administration does, I have to say, I am in favor of this. When people talk, or worse text on their cell phones while driving, they have the impairment of a (*)(*)(*)(*) faced drunk driver. Keep these idiots off the road, they kill innocent drivers.

It is actually quite different, and requires a significant degree of concentration as opposed to conversing with someone sitting in the car with you: http://oas.uco.edu/98/T98/BOGLE.HTM

Harry Reid: "There is not a bill we can pass to cause people to have common sense”

    Yet...
    almost everyday...
authoritarian statists try to do just that.

Nobody thinks passing laws will give people common sense, but they can help protect others from a lack of it.

Only an authoritarian statist would dream up ways to levy Pigovian taxes on stupidity...
and only a compliant sheep would support their efforts.
