WASHINGTON (AP) — "President Barack Obama will not meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he travels to Washington in March, the White House said Thursday.

Spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said that in keeping with "long-standing practice and principle," the president does not meet with heads of state or candidates in close proximity to their elections. "Accordingly, the president will not be meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu because of the proximity to the Israeli election, which is just two weeks after his planned address to the U.S. Congress," Meehan said."

"Netanyahu is scheduled to speak to Congress on March 3 and will push for additional sanctions on Iran. The invitation was a coordinated effort by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., with staff discussions beginning last year, according to a senior Republican aide, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to publicly discuss the private talks.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said it was inappropriate for Boehner to invite Netanyahu to address Congress in the shadow of the election and give the appearance of endorsing the prime minister.

"If that's the purpose of Prime Minister Netanyahu's visit two weeks before his own election, right in the midst of our negotiations, I just don't think it's appropriate and helpful," Pelosi said."

IMO: Here we go again, as Boehner and McConnell have overstepped their pay grade again and offered to have Netanyahu address Congress two weeks before his own election in an effort to raise his flagging support in Israel.

Boehner and McConnell did this thing without contacting or informing the White House or the State Department of their clandestine communications dating back to last year. This is a grave affront to our knowledge, safety and protocol which stipulates any guests go thru the White House and State Department first, so that everything is in place before any guest arrives in Washington.

I don't believe that President Obama has invited Netanyahu to visit Congress and republicans in Congress have clearly overstepped the boundaries stated in our Constitution concerning in an unacceptable affront to our sitting president, ignoring the safety of our people, in yet another devious plot to make President Obama look like a weak president.

Boehner/McConnell contacted the Israeli ambassador on Jan. 8 to see if he would be interested in coming to Congress to give a speech...but neglected to tell either the President, nor State Department of their plans. Boehner and McConnell do not yet run the country. We already have a president who is running this country, and we don't need any sniveling, sneaky, republican twits to run stupidly over protocol and our rules of procedure and ultimate safety of people in Congress, and in Washington by Netanyahu's arrival to bolster up his fading fan base in Israel.

Both Boehner and McConnell should be subject to an investigation to see if there was treason or malfeasance against a sitting president because when a congressman decides he will run the country, only bad things can happen.

 

Overstep their pay grade? President Obama admitted being president was above his pay grade. And just for the record, I refuse to escort Jennifer Lawrence to the Academy Awards Ceremony, I absolutely refuse to buy Bill Gate's mansion, and I will not accept the position of CEO for Comcast no matter how hard they beg.

Israel's relationship with the US is a big deal in Israel. We give them giant military aid. We are one of the only supporters of their assault on Palestine. We are the reason that Palestine doesn't have full nationhood at the UN.

Netanyahu's appeal has been based on Israeli national security. So, motion with the UN and Iran undercuts Netanyahu, as threat is reduced and he is not even seen as the reason for the reduction. It helps move the Israeli discussion back toward domestic policy - a topic that has brought out tens of thousands of protestors in Israeli cities.

Now, Boehner invites him to congress to talk about Iran!! Perfect. What makes ANYONE think that was Boehner's idea?

 

You need to support that with some sort of evidence.

The US is and has been hugely supportive of Israel as have all previous presidents.

I think most American's are proud to have Israel as an ally, support them in every way, but the elections in Israel will be decided in Israel and he will win.

As I understand it, he was invited by the leaders of both chambers, to speak to our Congress and yes maybe, over Iran's sanctions, which Republicans want in place (not started) if and when talks fail. As far as I'm concerned Obama started this back door lobbying with Cameron calling Congress members, to plead for the delay of sanctions....

 

Congress is charged with ALL legislation and has TOTAL control over the purse, where money comes from and where it's spent. The Executive, is charged with executing and enforcement of ALL legislation, not what the President or any department head feels should be done. I understand, this practice sounds impossible today, with 20/40,000 new unauthorized regulations coming out each year, that do not have Congressional approval, but that's what is suppose to be....

This is absolutely false.

The last war was started by Israel using collective punishment on Gaza because Gaza joined the unity government of Abbas and because Israel (wrongly) thought Hamas in Gaza was responsible for an attack in West Bank. Human beings died because of that decision by Netanyahu.

In fact, the blockade IS a continuing act of war. And, Israel refuses to live up to its ceasefire agreement - an agreement that was essentially imposed on Gaza.

Your solution is ethnic cleansing. It's morally reprehensible and clearly a crime under international law. And, no, citizens of West Bank and Gaza own their property. That's their citizenship. That's where they live, and they have every right to live there. Even under a one-state solution, those people have every right to live there. AND, if they are displaced by conflict, they have right of return,.

What Israel is doing to Gaza is a massive crime as it is, and needs to end immediately.
