Why does it matter? Isn't the average consumer interested in just what the number is, rather than a comparison between car/truck types? Certainly once you understand that the government is involved A) you don't believe much processed information they provide and B) should know enough to suspect even their base data.

So what the Volt sticker says to me is, "Gee, it doesn't use much gas".

No the average consumer is not interested in the average. Who in the hell shops cars by the average? When I bought my truck I didn't shop based on the average of all automobile models. I shopped based on the class I was interested in. I based my final conclusion and purchase on the information about provided by the industry and reviewers of the industry about the class not the average of everything.

They dont like to talk about that. The stark reality of battery replacement is one of the main reasons the resale value of hybrids has plummeted in recent years. When there was novelty the resale value of hybrids was high but as the novelty wore off and realty set in and more and more people found out that they had overpaid for what essentially became a conventional model as the battery died reality set in over novelty for consumers.

Who in the hell shops cars by fuel mileage? If that were true, we would all be driving an EV of some sort, or would be importing some of those cool European minicar turbo diesels. Americans NOT doing these things sure says fuel mileage just doesn't matter all that much to the AVERAGE american.

I never really thought of my two prior hybrids as "novelty". I certainly didn't like the idea of $7000 replacement cost on the Escape, but the Camry would have ran about $3000 or so, assuming I even needed to replace it in 150,000 miles. The Toyota system is going longer than people want to own the cars, so that seems like a reasonable life. No idea what to think about the Volt yet, it is rumored to be $10K or better to replace? With the quality apparently built into them, maybe it won't be much of an issue over the lifetime of the car. I'll see, I guess.
